bad gas mileage

i have a 2008 sport...when i bought it, the range said about 360 on a full tank. but recently, the range has been saying 300-310.

Ive got the oil changed, checked the air filter, actually starting putting premium gas (montana has lower octane, well at least where im located)...can anybody help me out what else to check/replace?

thank you!

I would start w/ the easy

-clean MAF
-check tire pressure

There are a lot more but I can't think this early in the morning... Are you all stock still? Done any mods? Different tires? There's is a lot of discussion about how accurate the on board computer is with MPG.... 13 mpg mixed for the v8 isn't too far off from normal

X2 Check the simple things first and work your way through the engine. Our on board computers are not accurate at all. You could use it for a rough estimate but i always average 1-2mpg's under what my computer says, unless im on the highway. In my V8, im averaging 16.5 while my computer reads 18.3.

I know its spring now and im seeing small improvements in my range but i always loose a couple miles in my range during the winter and early spring months due too warming up the vehicle and winter gas. Good luck, hope its an easy fix!

Many, many variables and potential reasons for poor fuel mileage. Has this happened slowly over time or suddenly? Note that a drop of 50-60 miles on a 23 gallon tank is equating to a bit more than a 2 MPG loss which can easily be the result of a change in driving habits, change in driving location, change in environmental conditions, change in ethanol content of the fuel or other BTU-impacting fuel issue. Also, using the "miles per tank" method is a very inaccurate method for seeing real trends in your mileage, especially from fill-up to fill-up.

I'd start with what was mentioned above; tire pressure check, MAF check and even a TB cleaning. I'd also check if any of your brakes are dragging.

i don't mean to thread jack but i also seem to be noticing a gas mileage problem. i even tried driving easy for a full tank (easy accelerating and braking, warming up for a few seconds). with doing that in mostly city driving i was only able to average 13.7mpgs. my usual as of late has been around 12.5. i know we drive an suv and they use a lot more gas than say my mom's corolla, but this seems off.

upon accelerating there seems to be slight resistance from my front end. may there be something wrong here? or is it just me since this is my first rwd?

2006 v6 sr5. fully stock

All stock, but i have yokohama geolander tires on. eventually i will do something with the intake and exhaust

I have the v6 and when i read the miles per gallon mode, it usually averages around 16. And i thought it was supposed to be around 19-20mpg. my brother in law has an 04 4runner v6 and he is still managing to get about 370 a tank...and this is just reading the range mode

If you read your manual, the Range indicator is for how many miles you have left until the empty light pops on (roughly a gallon or two before completely empty) As for the Mileage Indicator? It learns your driving habit, there's a calibration method buried somewhere in the service literature, I will see if I can find it when I have the time...

Hit the reset button on your mileage indicator when driving at a steady 40 mph and smile when you see it tell you you're getting 30+ mpg.

Then ignore it. :thumb3:

Sweet...thanks man

I just cleaned my MAF and TB and notice that I don't have to step of the gas pedal harder to reach the desired speed. Also, while doing the cleaning I went ahead in resetting the EFI.

It's still early to say if it improve my gas mileage but it worth the effort to perform the task. You will be amaze how dirty the TB and have to spray, scrub, spray, scrub to clean it. I almost use a steel brush to clean the dirt but patience prevails.
