Bad noise from tranny?

Have a 2006 v8 4runner sport full time 4wd. When pulling the boat out of the water or up in the mountains off road going up hill, makes a slipping and loud noise unless i put it into 4 low. Any hints? Think this would be covered in the warranty?

I would suspect the transfer case since 4L is OK. I think it would be covered under warranty too. Give the dealer a call and best of luck.

Probably vsc/a-trac engaging. Do you have the center diff locked and do lights pop up on the dash?

Yes the slip light comes on and beeping can be heard, but not all the time. Sometimes you just hear grinding and the vehicle goes no where. If I am pulling just the boat trailer out of the water (800lbs?), it all slips and the car goes no where. Mind you, the wheels aren't slipping on the ground. This is a full time 4wd vehicle and I would know when that happens. The center dif was not locked.

My wife was on a McDonalds (I know, I'll have to break her of that habit) speedbump yesterday, pressed the gas to get over it and just heard gears grinding, but it did go over the bump. So something is up. It is actually at the dealership now being looked at. I went on a slant uphill and showed them the issue, and it beeped and the slip light came on while it was engaging. But the noise it like 3 times as loud when theres weight on the vehicle like a load full of gear or pulling a boat and it wont go anywhere, just sits there and grinds.

This problem happens on logging roads uphill and pulling the boat out of the water without putting it into 4 low. I shouldnt HAVE to put it into 4 Low should I? Is this the way ALL full time 4WD vehicles perform from Toyota? If so, seems messed up. Otherwise it just grinds the gears and sits there? Are you blind? Its normal. The ABS is engaging and the ABS makes an awful clunky, crunchy noise. Save your money. Its not grinding its gears- - its engaging ABS to keep you from sliding back on the incline so that you can slowly apply throttle and go "up" it without wheel slip.

First of all, Youknowitdadio, welcome to the forum.

Some of what you described seem like the Hill Start Assist Control feature on the 4th gen 4Runner; however, the bulk of what you described definitely does not 'sound' normal.

While I haven't towed anything with my 4Runner, I have been offroading and know what the HSAC does...it does make a lot of noise and there are warning lights when it does work. Hill Descent Control makes a similar kind of racket as well.

I hope it is not, but it does sound like you have a more serious problem. Let us know what you find out from the dealer.

It does sound like the vehicle is just doing what it is supposed to do in order to find traction. The actuators, relays, etc. clicking to find traction on a wet/slippery boat launch. However when you say "Mind you, the wheels aren't slipping on the ground" Then I think otherwise also when you are saying it happens over a speed bump, I never have any of the sensors trip or have my vehicle searching for traction over a little speed bump.

The issue I have is that it doesn't seem to happen all the time during normal driving so as much as I hate to say V8 Brah is correct, I think he is. Just because you may not think the vehicle is spinning the tires, all it takes is one tire to be slipping for the computer to take control.

Next time you are pulling your boat out and this happens try and keep steady on the gas with the RPMs under 3K, if there is traction, the ATRAC will find it out and you should be good. Do a little searching on ATRAC both on this site and possibly on YouTube to see if you can hear if the sound is similar to what you are hearing.

Could be either at the boat ramp IMO; however, if the CDL is unlocked it is not ATRAC - it is traction control preventing wheel slip and limiting power. Very different things.

It sounds like ATRAC (ATRAC works with the center differential unlocked or locked), by the way are you bi-polar? Acting like an arse and then back peddling saying you are trying to "stir things up"
