I'll try to write it in lamens terms. Perhaps my use of "on" and "work" is confusing some of you.
Can you guys please report this to the moderator as well. Even his new name is offensive.

I am fine with the screen name as long as his mouth stays in check, which so far it has. Maybe I am one of the, glass half full type of guys?
He has posted about 15 times today it's hilarious! "Trying to establish a new reputation in a hour or less"
I'll watch my mouthtell me when you look at my avatar you don't laugh.

Yes the slip light comes on and beeping can be heard, but not all the time. Sometimes you just hear grinding and the vehicle goes no where. If I am pulling just the boat trailer out of the water (800lbs?), it all slips and the car goes no where. Mind you, the wheels aren't slipping on the ground. This is a full time 4wd vehicle and I would know when that happens. The center dif was not locked.
My wife was on a McDonalds (I know, I'll have to break her of that habit) speedbump yesterday, pressed the gas to get over it and just heard gears grinding, but it did go over the bump. So something is up. It is actually at the dealership now being looked at.

Ignore the acronym discussion. ATRAC (and VSC) discussion is a semantical nightmare and, historically, the term has been used differently at different times. The truck simply applies brakes to a spinning wheel, but the terms describing this get confusing.
As far as this thread is concerned, the 4runner can do 4 things: 1. Apply brakes to a spinning wheel (usually referred to as ATRAC) 2. de-throttle the engine. 3. beep 4. light up the dash. The rollback prevention called Hill Start Assist, which uses these things, may be involved too.
Assuming that you never heard actual gears grinding, the explanation is simple.
In high range without the center locked (standard mode), the brakes can pulse (grinding noise), the engine can de-throttle and make the truck go nowhere, and you get beeps and dash lights. Go to low range or lock the center diff and the de-throttling, beeps, and lights (VSC) are out of the picture. The pulsing of the brakes (ATRAC) can still happen to limit wheel slip if needed (grinding noise).
It does, though, sound like VSC may be overly sensitive. Hopefully the dealer will be able to tell.
You are right on the money.
