Bad noise from tranny?

Could be either at the boat ramp IMO; however, if the CDL is unlocked it is not ATRAC - it is traction control preventing wheel slip and limiting power. Very different things.

It just gets old...that's all and I think a lot of the forum members would agree.

Why do you think it wouldn't be ATRAC since the Diff isn't locked? ATRAC still works without the diff being locked. I am just confused because he is saying that the tires are not spinning. That made me think ATRAC vs traction control because I know when my tires are spinning and the traction control kicks on, but???

I guess we will see what his dealer tells him, if he looks into what noises are normal to hear in the runner, or better yet shoot some video of what is going on.

ATRAC only engages when the CDL is locked - if CDL is unlocked its traction control.

This is how I always saw it from what I have read. Are you calling the VSC traction control?

ATRAC is always active on the 4Runner, it does get more aggressive in 4Lo. The CDL button locks the center diff and turns VSC off. Also if the center diff is open TQ can flow front to back on the axles, thus to get the best out of the ATRAC in technical terrain you need to lock the center diff.

VSC will cut power though if all the tires are slipping, like just hammering the gas on ice, etc.

ATRAC decreases over 3000RPM. ATRAC shuts off at 40mph. That is when VSC starts to to correct over steer and under steer.
 
Now I feel bad about V8 Brah, he was actually starting to contribute like a normal member. I guess it was too late and he made too many enemies in the time he was here.

Yup, look under his name....He did make a lot of people angry. I admit, I reported some of his posts because they were out of line, multiple times. However recently in this thread, it seemed like he was turning a new leaf...too late I guess.

Yeah I don't feel sorry for him at all. He's a **** and was called on it multiple times. Good riddance.
 
I don't feel sorry for him at all. Look at some of his postings, he was acting very disrespectful to others, a real douche bag if you ask me.
 
It sounds like it could be normal operation of the multiple traction control features, but what exactly do you mean by grinding gears? Because I am visualizing the sound you get when you mis-shift in a manual or the sound of an improperly adjusted differential which are very loud different sounds.

What did the Dealership say so far?

Where did you find this info, because from everything I have read ATRAC works the way I posted earlier, not to repost but like below. Maybe you are thinking how it works in something other than the 4Runner?

No you are wrong. Entirely. Active traction control or ATRAC is activated when the CDL is locked. It utilizes the ABS system to manipulate and transfer power from the slipping wheels to the wheels with grip across the open front and rear differentials There is no such system engaged when the CDL isn't locked. VSC is "active" when normally cruising around.

I have more than enough experience with ATRAC in both my Land Cruiser and my 4Rrunner. Locking the CDL turns off vsc allowing the aforementioned power transfer technique to work.

It sounds like you are confusing the VF4 Torsen system with what ATRAC does. The Torsen simply manipulates power to the front and rear axles based on steering and throttle input. Just like my Audi which utilizes the same system.

I know this is you, welcome back. I think you need to re read or re think here. I think you are getting something mixed up with your other vehicles??

Post #60 confirms what I am saying in the link you posted: "ATRAC does not cut power, but VSC and the TRAC system does. VSC and TRAC are disabled with the center diff locked, or in the 08 models with the VSC off switch. You can also look into a mod on older models to disable VSC."

Now read here, this is almost identical to what I said earlier. Plus this same guy is the one giving info in the link you supplied:

So, I haven't read the entire thread you linked to, yet...but the impression I got was that ATRAC works better (in an offroad situation) with the center differential locked...I haven't seen anything that stated that ATRAC if off if the center diff isn't locked. VSC is turned off with center diff locked.

ATRAC was discussed on the forum before as well...and the impression I got was that ATRAC works regardless of the state of the center diff....because 2WD 4Runners have a similar system just for the rear axle.

I do believe ATRAC is 'on' all the time, but only 'works' effectively if the center diff is locked???

Maybe they kept it 'on' because the 4th Gen has a limited slip center diff...and it can have some limited effect. I can see it being somewhat useless if the center diff was open...in some offroad cases a limited slip diff is no better than a open diff...hence the word 'limited'.
