Hey guys. New to the forum...so first let me say hello. I've been reading threads from your site religiously for about a month, and I gotta say...I'm really impressed with all of the info and knowledge this site contains. I've been on quite a few Auto forums before, and I would have to say this site is by far the most informative, and it seems like the people in the community are always willing to help fellow enthusiasts and/or newcomers like me. So, thank you.

I should also say.....my "build thread" won't be as cool as some of the other people's threads on this site. Some of you have really bad ass trucks and I really love reading your threads, but unfortunately, I don't have the time or the money to sink big bucks into my Runner, at least not at the moment. I'm a single dad who recieves zero child support, so it's gonna be slow going. But, I will get the Runner where I want to get her, it's just gonna take a little more time than some of you. lol Really, I just want this thread to keep a good history of things. Of course, I appreciate any attention this thread gets and welcome all advise and comments. I'm sure I will be asking many questions along my journey. Thanks for reading this far! lol

Anyways.....About a month ago, I decided it was time to get rid of the 98 Trans am, and buy something a little more reliable. The Trans am was definately a fun car, but at 150,000 miles, and things starting to wear out as they do, the car was about to start costing me more than I wanted to spend on it...so I sold it. And that's also when I decided to buy a Runner. Beforehand, I did quite a bit of research looking for something dependable, and easy to repair, and kept coming back to the 4Runner! So, I found one locally on CL that I thought was a good buy, and purchased it.

I ended up buying a 1996 SR5, 160,xxx miles, 2WD for $2200. The guy originally wanted $3000, but after a short test drive and performing a lengthy inspection, I ended up talking him down $800 (I would have given him what he wanted for it, but you know how that goes). Anyways....I was really happy with the purchase. She's a little older than I would have liked, but for what I talked him down to, I didn't want to pass it up. Here she is the day I bought her:

<a href="http://s265.photobucket.com/user/chris19740113/media/interior.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii202/chris19740113/interior.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo interior.jpg"/></a>

She's not in too bad shape. She purrrrs like a kitty, and obviously, she took a light hit on the rear pass. bumper....and another on the front driver's bumper....but other than that, the outside is in pretty decent shape. Especially and pleasently surprised with the paint. IMO, paint that is this old has usually started fading, or has other small imperfections (dings, scrapes, etc). No dings or chips in the paint that I can find. Interior is not in bad shape. Just really dirty. I don't think this guy every cleaned the inside. There is dust EVERYWHERE! But, everything works...and the wear on the seats is a little better than I thought it would be too, and I freaking love the sun roof! (never had a car with a sun roof lol) :)

I spent the first weekend doing the normal maintenance stuff. Judging by the appearance of the oil and tranny fluid, she had just had a tune up, but I wanted peace of mind, so I started there. Changed oil, transmission fluid and filters, spark plugs & wires. Also replaced the PCV valve, air filter and O2 sensor. Under the hood was especially dirty as well, so I pulled the air filter assy and cleaned it out, and removed the throttle body and gave it a good cleaning as well. Finished it off with spraying the engine with some Gunk engine degreaser and hosed it off. It's not perfect...but def better. I ran outta time, but still want to replace diff fluid, flush the cooling system and bleed the brakes- they feel a little soft. I guess that's my project for next weekend.

Also need to look into upgrading the brakes as soon as I can. There's def a warped rotor or two, judging by the vibration I get under mid-hard braking. It seems like I read something on this site about the brakes one the T4R being under-sized, and that Tundra brakes are heavier and a direct replacement. That project is at the top of my list as well...so I will start researching it soon.

I'm also aware of the "pink milkshake" issue, and that's at the top of my list as well. While cleaning the engine a few weekends ago, I noticed hair-line cracks on the top of the radiator, so I was gonna replace it anyways. I'll look into a trans-cooler when I do that project.

This past weekend, I was able to get quite a bit done on the Runner. Started by pulling those damn running boards off! (I hear they aren't cool in the 4Runner world! lol) After that, I ran up to NTB to have the tires flipped around. The previous owner was obviously blind, because he had the whitewalls (letters) on 2 tires (rear) facing out, and the two front tires facing in. So while at NTB having 2 of them swapped around....the technician informed me that 2 of the tires had been patched by someone. Both of them were patched on the sidewalls! Of course...this is a big no-no....so I was forced to replace two of the tires. I would have replaced all 4, but money was pretty tight at that time, having just spent $2200 on the Runner a week before. Anways...I ended up going with these Falken all-terrain tires.

<a href="http://s265.photobucket.com/user/chris19740113/media/newtires.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii202/chris19740113/newtires.jpg" border="0" alt="new Falken tires photo newtires.jpg"/></a>

When I first bought the runner, I wanted to go bigger....but given the situation, I had to settle with these. The guy at NTB felt sorry for me and cut me a good deal on them. Originally $150 each....he sold them both to me for $200 installed/out the door. I'll go back for the other two next payday. The bigger tires I wanted to go with originally will have to wait until I upgrade the suspension (probably with the tax return).

After that fun, I headed back to the house to tackle the next project: washing her from roof to tires. And the plastic trim under the front bumper and the piece on top of the rear bumper are already getting on my nerves. They are badly faded and in desperate need of attention as you can see.

<a href="http://s265.photobucket.com/user/chris19740113/media/frontbumpbefore.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii202/chris19740113/frontbumpbefore.jpg" border="0" alt="before grill photo frontbumpbefore.jpg"/></a>

After giving her a good wash, I started by pulling the bumper pieces and I also took this time to pull the grill and see what I can do about the fading/corrosion on the chrome. You can see a little of it in the above picture.

I started by painting the plastic bumper pieces with some flat black spray paint for bumpers that I bought at the autoparts store. Sorry...I forget which brand I used. Four coats of paint later, they look much better. (pictures below)

While the plastic bumper pieces were drying, I decided to tackle the chrome grill to see what I could do about the corrosion. Here you can see what I'm talking about. Most of the chrome is faded and appears to have a corrosion build-up covering most of the surface.

<a href="http://s265.photobucket.com/user/chris19740113/media/grillbefore.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii202/chris19740113/grillbefore.jpg" border="0" alt="grill close up before2 photo grillbefore.jpg"/></a>

A closer look:

<a href="http://s265.photobucket.com/user/chris19740113/media/grillbefore2.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii202/chris19740113/grillbefore2.jpg" border="0" alt="grill close up before photo grillbefore2.jpg"/></a>

After trying many mild cleaning solutions unsuccessfully, I decided to try wet-sanding the grill to see if it would clear it up. So I broke out the wet-sanding supplies and had at it. Wow...what a difference! Here you can see where I've started (right) compare to what hasn't been done yet (left).

<a href="http://s265.photobucket.com/user/chris19740113/media/grillduring.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii202/chris19740113/grillduring.jpg" border="0" alt="grill during photo grillduring.jpg"/></a>

Major difference! I've done wet-sanding before on clear plastic light enclosures and headlights, but never on plastic/chrome. I was so happy with the results, I spent most of the afternoon wet-sanding the entire grill....and then painted the inner fins of the grill with the flat black paint I used on the bumper peices. I ended up leaving the major parts of the grill chrome, the inside parts black. Here's the finished product on the grill and the peice I painted black under the bumper. (Ignore the water spots! lol)

I think I'm off to a pretty good start for a poor guy! Anyways...here is the truck as she sits today.

<a href="http://s265.photobucket.com/user/chris19740113/media/asis7-30-13.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii202/chris19740113/asis7-30-13.jpg" border="0" alt="as is 07/30/13 photo asis7-30-13.jpg"/></a>

I'll spend my little bit of free time at work this week researching the brake upgrade....and the radiator/trans cooler upgrade. I don't think I want to go back with OEM on the radiator. And hopefully, I'll be able to get my other two tires on payday. Can't stand driving around with 2 sets of tires on my ride.

Anyways...more updates to come. Thanks for reading! PEACE.

Thanks! Man, I've got sooo much in mind for this truck. "Must haves" would definately be a suspension/tire upgrade, bumpers front and back, a wench, a supercharger and a 4 wheel drive coversion! haha

But realistically, this year, aside from brakes and radiator, I'll be looking at suspension, tires and possibly bumpers. I'll just have to see how the money situation plays out.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

LOL those are the words I was looking for! 4WD Conversion! :D

For your brakes - go ahead and do the Tundra Brake Upgrade. Many members concur it's one of the best mods they've done to their trucks.

Thanks for the advise man. From what I've read, it's a great upgrade. I'm leaning that way. Seems like I read I could do the same on the ball joints as well?
Both are at the top of my list. I'll be hitting the forum hard this week getting the specifics and part numbers. This forum is a treasure trove of that kinda info!

Hopefully I can knock it out within the next month or so.

Not for ball joints - you're thinking of Tacoma ball joints. Just stick with OEM 4runner ball joints, they work just the same. I wouldn't worry about them until you decide to lift though.

Ohhh...okay. I gotcha. Thanks again for your advise. I really appreciate it. I can't tell you guys how stoked I am about this truck! For the life of me, I can't figure out why I've never owned a Toyota before.....

Oh! I was cleaning up a little after work today and I found a maintenance log sheet under the pass seat. Apparently the previous owner was meticulous about preventive maintenance. He logged all work that was done on the truck. As far as I can tell, all PM's were done at the intervals Toyota suggests. Great peace of mind there! Took me by total surprise considering how dirty the inside was! lol

Truck looks good! White lettering = awesome. Im glad somebody else appreciates them!

Look into the last time the timing belt and water pump were done on that maintenance log. Apart from that it looks like your on track to a truck that will last you another 150k

Yeah..on the right vehicle, I dig it. I think it looks good. Will do on the timing belt/water pump. I haven't been all thru the log yet, but hopefully it's in there.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Peace.

Check your timing belt cover, there should be some sharpie letting you know the last time the whole shabang was changed (mileage).
