bad starter?

I have a '96 with 5-speed manual transmission. About half the time it just barely cranks when trying to start the engine with the key in the ignition and the clutch pedal pressed all the way down, however, in those instances when I use the "Clutch Start Cancel" switch it just fires right up immediately on the first try.

Where should I begin to diagnose and fix this?

Replace the clutch cancel switch attached to the clutch. If you remove the lower panel on the drivers side you can see this switch. Check the wire connections coming to the switch. Usually this switch is very robust. Probably a lose connection.

thanks for the tip! might you happen to have any photos for clarification to help me identify this switch with the possible loose connection?
