Bad Torque converter clutch

2005 v6 111k---Anyone else have this problem yet? Had a bad head gasket at 93k-----$3500. Does anyone know how much this job should cost? Thanks, Dave

I recently had to replace my torque converter. I'm pretty sure they run in the $700 $800 dollar range. The big thing is labor though thats where its going to cost you. I had my friends dad who owns a transmission shop help me out so I didn't pay that much I also my TC rebuilt as well so you might want to look into that too. How do you know it's a bad clutch in the TC?

I ' m diagnosing that I have a bad torque converter clutch assembly by reading all the posts on this forum . I have exactly the same symptoms as everyone else who has the misfortune of this bad automatic transmission. Have you looked at what is involved in just checking the fluid level? Changing out the transmission fluid looks to be a major undertaking. I think Toyota should get behind this problem and do the right thing by the vehicle owners----Dave

Check the fluid level. Has the trans every been serviced?

And what do you expect Toyota to do? I almost never see the truck auto transmissions having issues (Seq, Tun, 4R, FJ, etc). If you're a rarity, well... its unfortunate especially because you just had the headgasket issue.

I did see a 06 FJ getting a Toyota reman trans last week, but the truck had 180k miles and never had been serviced.

Checking the fluid is not that complicated at all.

I recently fully flushed out my WS transmission fluid with a total of 14 quarts on my 2009 4runner.

Search my user name and find my post. I think I put the link in there.

Basically you make a jumper cable. Just a piece of thin wire. You jump 2 pins at OBD2 connector. Then you go through a sequence of neutral to Drive shifts. (See link in my other post). This will put the transmission into fluid temperature check mode.

Once the AT light is illuminated it is at the correct temperature so you check the fluid at this time. If the AT link is blinking fluid is too hot and cannot check the fluid. So have to let the transmission cool.

To check the fluid. Unbolt the overflow bolt and the fill bolt. Start filling the transmission with a manual hand pump or something at the fill location. Once you see fluid coming out of the overflow location stop, and wait till the fluid comes to a trickle and then screw the nut back on. Screw the fill nut back on too. Now you have the correct level as per Toyota manual.

Yeah I know its all fairly easy. I just did a drain and fill. I was just curious how you got it out of the torque convertor? You disconnect a cooler line and let it pump it out?

I disconnected the return line at the radiator. If you have a V8 you can disconnect it at the external cooler in front of the radiator.

Then I started the engine, let it run for 20-40 seconds until 3 quarts pumped out. Stopped engine. Filled 3 quarts of new WS fluid in the fill hole, started engine for another 20-40 seconds until 3 quarts came out, filled 3 quarts of new WS fluid, repeat, and repeat.

I flushed out 14 quarts, at the 10th quart or so the fluid came out looking cherry red and not brownish red like the old fluid looked like.

I plan on doing another full flush in 15-20k miles.
