i appriceate all the help you guys have given me in the past but my old thread went dead so im going to start a new one. 85 22re. i rebuildt the engine and have the same problems i had before rebuild (minus huge hole in side of block). im not too sure if po did any shady stuff but ill try my best to let you know whats up. i tried to check my codes how the manuel said. i put a paper clip into the circit with the 2 wires. then went and turned the key on. the oil light came on but i got nothing from the engine light. today i used the same test plug to check my timing... with the clip in...and truck runnen it didnt seem to have any affect on idle. seems weird to me. also with the truck runnen the engine light flashed 7 then 11 over and over. are the codes accurate with the truck runnen? why wont it flash codes while not running? thats my main question. i wont even start getten into the truck problems lol. thanks.:redbrick:

heres where it gets weird. i was having an issue where the truck seemed to be starving for gas. it would stutter on acceleration. with truck runnen it gave me code 7. i took off the whole intake tps and all and installed one that i had taken off a good runnen 22re pre 89. all goo cleaned out. it ran good at first then eventully stutter again. i then checked timing...sounded off and was suprised to see it was way off. im new to engines but it seemed weird to me since timing was done right after the rebuild. i adjusted it and it sounded better. when i hit the freeway it wouldnt go. it took forever to get up to 50mph... i also smelled rotten eggs. i may have screwed up. i used the big flathead screw to lower the idle but upon ferther reveiw it looks like thats not the propper way to adjust. i have no tach either. any way now its blinken (while runnen) a 7 and 11. i find it hard to beleive this tps is also bad when it was storred properly and ran good on the other truck. it was never removed from the tb so i assume it was set prop. i have yet to learn to adjust the tps fyi. thanks for advise.
 
Did you calibrate the TPS to the correct resistance?
it sounds to me like a bad injector harness ground this is common just remove sand contacts and reinstall.

if none of this works you may need to look into the distributor pick up if its bad it will send wrong timing signals to the cpu and it will have all kinds of issues

i would start with all the grounds they play havoc on the old 22re engines. clean em all up its free and easy.
 
so follow the harness to the ground and sand that or sand all the contacts after unplugging the injectors? thanks for all advise. i have something else to try before i blow it up. what about my code problem? it wont blink with the key on. truck has to be running. are codes still accurate with truck runnen?
 
thanks. i bought a sodering gun and am going to check the wires monday. god i hope they are seperated lol. i just put the damn intake back on. wish id have learned about this before i did. vision is there any grounds to the truck i need to clean besides the splices?
 
well thanks for the help again. you guys are very usefull. i pulled the harness apart and found some of the conectors were ripped apart. hopefully i put this thing back together and have no more issues. i would have never thought to check the wiring harness. thanks again. now if i could just learn to soder. im so frusterated with it im considering butt connectors.:redbrick:

If it were me, I'd go looking for an intact harness or get yours to a professional. I can't solder either, and every time I've used a butt connector on a harness I've had cause to regret it.

Glad you found your trouble though.
 
UPDATE: and on to the next problem:roadkill:

thanks again for the advise. now i need more lol. ill be a full blown 22re guru

at this pace. like i said, i fixed the stuttering problem by fixing the broken

injector wires. then i figured out how to adjust my tps wich helped me fix

my timing problem. i now have it timed and it runs strong. im about 1k miles

into my rebuild and it seems like the massive oil consumption is going down

after switching to nondetergint oil. it still uses oil and i have noticed that i

seem to be building alot of crankcase pressure. i installed a new pcv. when

the truck is running for a min i hear a screaching sound in the head. when i

hear this sound, if i pull the pcv valve out i get a huge gush of air blowing

out. ive done a compression test and it was at 178 i beleive. im starting to

think i messed up a ring durring install. is it normal to have that much

crankcase pressure or am i just parinoid? i asked the machinist today and he

said a leak down test wont tell me anything if the compression is good.

looks like i need to just put a new set of rings in. opnions appriceated.
 
178 is excellent compression for a 4 cylinder so I'd say that's not your issue. I would still do a leakdown test as that can pinpoint issues that a compression test won't. For comparison my buddies 708 big block Chevy runs like a champ with only 120 PS I!
