Bad Weekend

Well, I spent the last week in North Carolina at a couple of conferences, which was fun and all, but I'm moving next Friday so I really would have rather been home. I've been so excited about moving that I don't really remember much of the crap they talked about at the conferences. Anyways, I got home on Friday to find that my sliders from Demello Offroad finally showed up, so another thing to be excited about, although with everything else going on I'm not sure when I'll get to put them on.
So, we were having a moving sale on Saturday morning so I can get rid of a bunch of stuff so I don't have to move it. We were taking stuff outside and I was coming back into the house and the dogs were right there on my heels as they just love to be in the way. Chip, my chocolate lab, came through the door and his rear end hit the floor. He tried to get up and couldn't. His rear left leg was sticking straight out and he wasn't moving it. My first thought was that he had dislocated something. I laid him down and was checking him over. He didn't seem to be in any pain, but the look on his face definitely let me know that something was wrong. I took him into the vet, and after a few x-rays and talking to a surgeon from Colorado State University and another one locally they diagnosed him with a Fibrocartilagenous Embolism (FCE). Basically it's like a stroke, but it happens in the spine and he's mostly paralyzed in the back end. The big thing is whether he will be able to go pee and poop on his own. He currently has a catheter, so it's hard to say, but he hasn't crapped yet.
I'm tore the hell up, and my wife isn't doin any better. This was supposed to be a good week. Our other puppy, a yellow lab, is heartbroken without her brother/chew toy here. I can deal with him not being able to walk, but if the rest of him isn't working I'm afraid I'm gonna have to make the choice that I really don't wanna have to make. Damn dogs anyways.....
Sorry I kind of rambled on, but it's been somewhat therapeutic to type this all. I suppose that's one of the things I really love about this forum, the support you receive from people. Well, I suppose that's about it.

That is not a post anyone wants to write. Sorry to hear that.

I still get choked up thinking about my last dog a had to put down after series of violent seizures..

Best of luck, I hope he can return home.

Perry, you have my deepest sympathy, pal. I'm very sorry to hear about this--I know just how much a dog can become part of the family, plus I've been around you with your dogs and know that's exactly what they are to you. I am sure you will do right by Chip, even if it means making the toughest of choices. Keep your strength up, bro.

To some, a dog is just a dog. To others (including myself) a dog can be so much more than that. Equal member of the family, faithful companion, the list goes on and on. I'm sorry to hear about this and definitely give you my best wishes.

I had to put down my 15-year-old Black Labrador Retriever about two years ago. Despite him being old, deaf, half-blind and becoming very lethargic rather suddenly, it was hard to do, and even though he wanted to tell me that he was "ready to go".......he looked at me is if to tell me that he knew what was going to happen.

I've seen fatal car crashes, sucicide and homicide when I was a deputy sheriff; but deciding (along with my son and ex-wife) to put down my faithful friend was harder to deal with than any of the aforementioned.

I know how you feel, but such decisions are never very easy. Your conscience wants to eat at you - no matter what you choose to do. Good luck and Godspeed, sir; and know that those of us "out here" will not criticize you for the path you choose.

P.S. Just do what you can to alleviate his suffering.

Rupp, sorry to read. Our "fur" kids mean more to us than many can imagine.
Stay strong and sometimes we have to do what's right for our best friend. No one ever wants to put down our beloved friends but you and your vets know whats best.
I know what you are going through........so, so sorry!

+1. Hardest thing to do for me is to see an animal suffering or to put one down. My thought go out to you, Bigrupp.

*****UPDATE*****

Well, I haven't had much time to sit at my computer lately with the move and all, but I am happy to say that Chip is doing much better. He is far from back to normal yet, but he is improving every day. After one month he is to the point where he has actually stood up on his own a couple of times. He cannot walk without help yet, but that has actually been good for me and losing some weight. lol. His right rear leg is pretty much back to normal, and his left rear leg is starting to work better. He actually does a walking motion with it and is stepping on his his pad without his toes curling under. He's got more energy than I do at this point and drags me around the yard, which I suppose I can't complain about too much. Anyways, I had a few minutes while I'm sitting here waiting for the city to come turn my water back on after a leaking main like in the house I've been in for two and half weeks and I thought I'd let people know he was doing better.

That is GREAT news, Perry! Also, I hear the new house is very nice (I finally got hold of Nic again). I'm hoping I have the goods to fix my cooling issue now, so maybe we can all hit the trails again soon. Take care!

Very nice to hear he's doing well. I'm sure he appreciated the unconditional love during his recovery so far. Glad to hear the little fighter is doing great things again!
