Bad_Vision's 1985 Toyota 4RUNNER TDI Swap (Completed swap)

Overboost. What psi is your tune specc'd to deliver? IIRC that seems high for a VNT-15 ... but I could be wrong. Let me know if/when you're ready to talk turbos :D
I think we only reason I can get a new turbo now as if it needed one. Still waiting to hear back from the tuner.

The tuner says that something on my system is broken it couldn't possibly be the tune. Even though it's a brand new actuator the veins move freely and it is set to factory specifications. So the only thing it could possibly be is the n75 valve according to Malone tuning.

TDI swap 2 I did something different for the trans cross member. Cut and stretched the stock.

TDI test drive is impressive. Going through your thread now. Might rethink the 3.4.
Thanks for the hard work on the documentation. Love this Forum.

i like the cross member mod and smoking deal on that HVAC control.
They had like over a hundred so I think they are old stock or repops but worth the money because its nice to have one that is intact and not faded!

The TDI is the only swap I will do until I can afford a new Toyota D2 and they import them cheaper.

On another subject. Disc brake conversion. I got the trail gear kit.
I have to say I am not impressed and the kit seemed to be cobbled together. Here is a list of things I'm disappointed with for a 430$ kit.

The brackets came in raw steel with no coating and had rust on them out of the box.

Brake pads only contact 20% of the rotor.

Brake pads have no anti rattle clips so they chatter and slap when driving and braking.

Also for stock wheel size 15" the rotors are about 1/16 of a inch away from the rim so if a rock gets in there it will ether ware away your wheel or damage the caliper.

I do not recommend the trail gear kit!

Got the truck back from the shop today it had a new timing pump and the injection pump was timed. Going to do the roll bar and exhaust tomorrow morning I have something really cool in mind let's hope I can pull it off as Saturday I move a hour away from my dad's shop to renovate a entire house this summer! Stay tuned!

Have you tested vacuum after the N75 with a vac gauge yet? Have you checked requested vs. actual via VCDS yet?

If you don't have a laptop, I highly recommend the Dell Latitude series. Look for one with a core i5, toss an SSD in there, and you're golden for cheap.

Yep after my exhaust and roll bar is in the only thing left to do is get a laptop for vcds. I have the cable and could technically hook my desktop to it but that might be a little annoying lol.

Yeah the only thing left to do is to see what requested an actual is.
I ran the other valve for a little while and it did the same thing so it's definitely in between those two but how to fix it after that is going to be hard to figure out.
Because if the n75 is good along with the actuator and turbo I'm stuck with what to do then!

I have heard that about the T-G gear before. I regret selling my complete Sky's kit a couple of years ago but needed quick cash.
Someday I would like this thing;
Full Floater Chunks
almost as much as I have into my entire project!

Vcds

Nick, text me if you have a free morning this week and I can drop by with a VCDS. FYI, I downloaded mine onto my 15" inspiron, awkward. The display is 4 1/2" x 6 1/2" and the smaller the unit the better, especially when you drag it under the hood or have it behind the steering wheel with you...02 cents

Thanks Jim. My OBD2 port is in the passenger kick panel so should be easy to reach

So Malone tuning says via the log jmodge was able to scan off my ECM that my actuator is not adjusted properly or my veins are clogged on my turbo.
Sense I have set the actuator myself twice that leaves only clogged turbo veins so sense I don't want to open that box of crazy on a 260k mile turbo. Next step for me is new tune and new turbo. absalom let's talk turbo, tube and nozzles

Where does your actuator begin to move, and at what psi does it stop moving? Have you tried manipulating the vanes by hand? They are rather easy to clean with oven cleaner by the way, if they are truly stuck.

Obviously, the more exciting solution is to just get a new turbo, but the above will get you going for now. Now, my absolute favorite turbo based on waaay too much research is the GTC1549VZ. MUCH newer technology, much quicker boost (you have to be careful not to give too much throttle at lower rpm's, it's just that fast), tons more headroom, and supposedly higher heat tolerances (this shouldn't be an issue if you ever plan on running meth inj anyways).

Now, Whitbread makes an adapter for this turbo, and you'd just need to make sure you have a vacuum (dumb) actuator, Whitbread can help you with this as well.

This turbo will blow the socks off the ancient VNT-17,17/22, and S7. The VK's are also decent, but will suffer from tons more lag, even when compared to stock 15.

You can find them used for relatively cheap, I've seen them as low as $500. Not truly bolt-on, but you clearly can handle a tiny bit of fab work. Keep us posted!!

absalom that guy is here in Michigan! That's perfect!
Definitely want full boost at close to idle as possible because it is a off-road truck so lower RPM power is great!
