Bajarack UT Flat experience?

Hey folks, first post here. Sorry to revive such an old thread, but I've browsed the various threads on the Baja Rack's and haven't seen this question addressed yet.

I'm going to order a Baja Flat UT rack for my Runner shortly. I plan to get one of the ones with the cutout for the sunroof. I'm trying to decide if I should pay the extra $$$ to get the optional sunroof insert as well. Anyone have experiences with this? If you have the rack with the sunroof cutout, how often and in what situations are you using your insert? (Or do you wish you'd bought an insert?)

I wouldnt waste your money paying a couple hundred for the insert, When the time arises and I need more rack space I'm gonna make my own crossbars out of T slot aluminum (prinsu) and bolt it through the holes meant for the insert.
As far as using the actual cut out I've used it for easy access to things on my roof or my wife uses it to take pictures while we're rolling.

I found the sunroof insert that be more trouble than useful. It limits mounting options for long items such as awnings and locating RTT due to the spacing differences with the main rack from side to side. I ended up selling my bajarack.

Good call on limiting mount options with the cutout. Thanks for the info!

Love It!

Another Bajarack ran...ordered

Picked up a 4Runner last week. First priority was get a roof rack on the way and replace the tires.
Ordered the Bajarack Utility Mesh sunroof cut-out after looking at all the options I could google. Just received estimated ship date of 2/16/21.
No real plans for the roof rack. When we can we use a campervan we made ourselves-

And we take a lot of pictures-

The mesh is traversible and we thought it might make a great platform for photography.
One question I do have is how easy/difficult is it to get onto the roof/onto the rack via the sunroof? We're old but still nimble.
