Bajarack UT Flat experience?

I'm thinking about joining the group buy, but have some Qs for those of you who own one already (thanks in advance!)

Given the low profile of the rack, are you able to wash/wax the roof (at least by hand much less a buffer tool)?

How was the mpg hit when not carrying anything?

how is (is there) the wind noise from the rack / front deflector? (did a husky/weathertech front hood lip deflector help/change anything?)

Can you strap down a Thule cargo carrier easily or do you "need" those accessory brackets BR sells?

If you have the ladder (before the patent lawsuit), how is it? did you need an extra strength piston for your rear hatch like Gobi?

Hey there,

For the price these can't really be beat, especially with the group buy pricing. If you are comparing these to the Gobi, besides the finish issue (gotta watch for rusting before Bajarack changed powdercoating suppliers) these are a pretty good deal.

- With any rack, washing the roof will be difficult. However if you have the model without mesh it is not that bad. I have the spy rack which sits 1-2" higher than the standard UT rack and I don't have any issues fitting a wash mitt underneath. If you order the rack with mesh you can easily just get a swifter and put a wash mitt over it to wash underneath. Or vinyl the roof so you don't have to worry about it.

- MPG hit was about 0.5-1mpg. This is with the higher Spy rack so it may be less with a standard UT rack.

- Negligible change in wind noise. You can tell its there but now I hardly notice it.

- You will need the Yakima/Thule adapters. If you want a better option (since these can't really hold much else when installed) you can buy the Yakima Bar setup and attach it to the sides of the rack (essentially building a Yakima bar setup on top of the Bajarack) for not much more.

- I don't have a ladder so can't comment on it.
 
Calling [MENTION=103699]lipek[/MENTION]...he has a spy number , set up pretty sweet with Maxtrax and other goodies. He's gonna give it to me because they just had a beautiful little baby girl, and his wheelin', campin', having fun days are OVER!:cry2:
 
I went back and forth on this for a bit. [MENTION=93894]J-BlickPhoto[/MENTION] had issues with PC but I hear they changed companies now. I just ordered a utility rack without sunroof cutout through the group buy. I have a Gobi ladder and plan to just stick with that. there are patent issues right now with Baja and to be honest, their ladder is fugly

FYI (this may be well known already...)
i initially read about ppl's issues with using the baja UT rack and Gobi ladder, but [MENTION=118406]Haydenatx[/MENTION] just installed the Baja UT rack with his Gobi ladder and had plenty of clearance between the ladder mount with tailgate open and rear of the rack. i guess baja updated their design to accommodate the other ladder?

Can confirm. About an inch of clearance with the Gobi ladder.

Wish I could provide more info but I just installed it a day ago.

Almost NO wind noise on the highway. Can't even tell it's there.

It's always disheartening when I read "can I wash and wax under it?" :tsk:

I digress...

i have no idea about the waxing...I do know that I can't reach that far underneath, however that's only when trying to mount accessories such as a bike rack or RTT.

I probably took a small hit on my MPG. Probably less than a mile or so...

There is some wind noise, especially when the sunroof is open. It's loud enough that I haven't opened my SR in years.

You can easily attach a cargo carrier.

I would seriously think about what you're going to use this thing for. Is it worth the weight? Wind noise? Why are you getting it? There are many times where I wish I had simple cross bars or a frontrunner, which is aluminum with slots. Oh and I've heard waxing underneath it is difficult. :tongue:

Would someone be able to snap a picture of the front feet and how they rest on the roof, and also confirm if they just sit on the roof or have sticky pads like a Govi?

THIS is what makes the decision for me harder. I plan on building a trailer with an RTT so I honestly don't really NEED a roof rack.
 
Doesn't Baja rack have a lot of QC issues?

Yesterday I purchase a 2.2m K9 rack. Baja does not make a flat rack for the 4th gen 4runner. Not sure why..

This is what confused me and was the reason for my question. I see lots of people saying they do have sticky pads like a Gobi, and lots saying they don't. Not sure what to think! I feel like sticky pads would be better since they'd prevent dirt and gunk from getting under the pads, but I'm not sure on that.

Also, Hayden, thank you for posting pics whenever you get the chance. Appreciate it. :) I'm curious what the feet look like and where they locate on the roof, because the Bajarack website shows all kinds of different foot designs and locations and it doesn't seem consistent.

whoever said they don't have 3M sticky feet is either lying to you or has an older version of the rack.
