Ball Joints

So back to the Tacoma LBJ and TRE, are they a bolt on fit? Pics? I am looking to do this soon and would like to hear some success from previous installs.

Did it. It worked. 1000 miles on them with 200 miles of off road use. No complaints.

I bought the Napa premium (I think that's what they called them). I'll check the part numbers when I get home tonight on the reciept.

Yep, the TREs did appear more sturdy.

So I did some searching for OEM prices:

LBJs:

Does anybody know why the ITRE and the OTRE are listed for 2wds only? These appear to be OEM parts. Total cost I figure to be around 2(85.46+123.62+47.01) =

$512.18 for Tacoma LBJs, ITRE, OTRE
 
I'm about to click "check-out" on Toyotapartszone.com to TACOMA ball joints and OTREs. If anyone has any yay or nays before I do this thing please speak now! The thing that is really chapping me on this website is that the OEM Outer tie rod ends are cheap--$35.32. They better be OEM! Even Napa premiums are $55.67.

Summary:
L LBJ $85.60 43330-39366
R LBJ $85.60 43340-39286
L OTRE $35.32 45046-39295
R OTRE $35.32 45047-39175

Through my dealer they wanted 116 and some odd change for the ball joints and 48 and some odd change for the outer tie rod ends. Rip off.

For inner tie rods I'll get Napa premiums because they are actually quite a bit cheaper than OEM. Really though, there is not much of a price difference between OEM and Napa LBJs and OTREs.

Here's the prices I got from Napa:
premium LBJs $73.49
premium OTREs $51.49
premium ITREs $64.89

josh please confirm this is the total prts list needed for your patented taco lbj mod...no other parts are needed or not needed right? meaning cn you get away with out the inners?

Uhm - who created the Taco lbj mod...:hungry:

It's is all good.

You won't need the inner's. They will bolt up. But - Even if there is no play, if the the inner tie rod can't hold it self up with out falling down, then it is worn out.

It should not be easy to move around.

ha, sorry douche move on my part, sorry!:D

yeah i just replaced my tre's about 5 months ago but figure $60 for some slightly beefier ones and being able to step up to the slightly stronger taco ball joints is worth it in the long run.....
 
Thanks to you Singtoe, I pulled the trigger on 2000 Tacoma LBJs and Outer tie rods the other day. Bill came out to a little over $250 with ShopTRD.com. I went in today to order a Napa premium tie rod for a little over $70. Can't wait to get the new front end components in! It'll almost be like all new steering, I just hope I can feel it.

Today I was driving a highway that was finished about 1 or 2 years ago. It's very smooth with hardly any rough spots on it. When I drive on it now with the old components still under the front end, it tracks very straight on the road. I can let go of the steering wheel for 5 seconds and it'll track straight until it starts to wander.

Now on rough, refinished asphalt road is where the problem really is. Theres a really rough road near my house that the city repatches with tar every now and then when they feel like it. I would compare it to severe washboard on a gravel road. On this road, I have to literally slow down to keep myself on the road. The roughness throws my 4runner every which way....it's scary. This better fix it!

I'm thinking of going this route but I have a question on which LBJ to get. I have a 2000 ltd 2WD and on shoptrd.com there are choices, which one to get w/pre runner or w/o pre runner 2wd? as there is a big difference in prices between the two. thanks

Pre runner Tacos use 4wd components.
2wd Tacos with non pre runner option is totally different. Can't use it at all.


All 2wd 4runners are "Pre Runners"
 
Just pulled the trigger on the Taco LBJ's and OTRE's. I ordered from NAPA, here are the part numbers I ordered:

LBJ's (went with Altrom as they also mfg the OEM's)
ATM SB3794L
ATM SB3794R
These list for $124.00 each, paid $72.81 each.

OTRE's
NCP 2693170
NCP 2693169
These list at $54.99 each, paid $49.83 each.

Zach and I are tackling a lot of the work on this bad boy on Friday. Hoping these along with the new shocks, springs, steering rack bushings, sway bar bushings, Tundra Brake kit and new wheels and tires will really bring my baby back to new.
 
Here's the parts that arrived from shoptrd.com today via FedEx. I weighed the ball joints on a cheap floor scale and it says they weigh about 5 lbs. each.

No comparison shots yet. If someone who knows what 4runner BJs/outer tie rods look like please comment on the looks of these Tacoma's.

well from the looks of it it's a sleeve to guide the bolt into place the chamfer on top of the sleeve is to help locate and position the ball joint when assembling, as far as our stock 4runners having those, i don't think so, not from my memory.....but my memory is ****, a few other have done this before so that shouldn't be an issue otherwise they would have mentioned having to cut off the sleeves or open up the hole in the hub assy..so chances are your good, and really it would only take about 5mins to double check that, the lower ball joint is held there by 4 bolts that should come right off
