Ball Joints

Thats a little disappointing that Toyota would use the same ball joint for all those different models. The Sequoia is so damn heavy compared to a 4runner or the Taco.

Please just confirm that the Taco lower Ball joint stud will fit the 4runner lower control arm.

I was looking at RockAuto Auto Parts and they offer ACdelco parts for $55ea LBJs and $26ea OTREs. Is ACDelco a good substitute or just pay the little extra for TRD parts???

Yes, they fit. But you need the Taco Outer Tie Rod End too

Just a heads up, most if not all non-Toyota OE balljoints don't last as long as Toyota OE BJs. Some have failed in as little as 20,000 miles.

I don't think that there are TRD spec ball joints. If some one is calling their ball joints TRD and charging extra, you should stay away.

Some learn the hard way. On a crucial part like a ball joint that's a dealer only part for me.

I always ask for the "mechanic price" and they always give it to me....20% off. Try it.

Did anyone think to measure the distance between the ball jt stud and tie rod stud on both of these setups? That could change the steering response if the arm is longer or shorter than the 4runner.

Armature?

When I compared the parts side by side, they visually look like the same length form rod to rod. (put one on top of the other and eyed it out).

This.

Other than making the steering much tighter (not TOO tight - just tighter, as it'd be if I had new ball joints - which I do lol), it didn't change the feel of my steering.
 
Did the swap! kung is right. i lost about a degree and a half of steering. solid as a rock though. first time i've ever driven the truck over 60 without so much as a shimmy or a shake.
 
How much should it cost to do the Taco part-swap including labor? I've got a new clunk that sounds a little like a sway bar link but not quite, and the front links are good, so I'm worried about the more important stuff up there. It won't hurt to do the ball joints and TREs even if the sound is something else.
 
Can anyone tell me if the ball joint problem would cause a shake when braking? The rotors were just resurfaced and it still shake so I'm leaning towards worn ball joints.

no, that would prob need new rotors or resurfacing... get tundra brakes.

for ball joint, you will feel like there's no power steering and a loose feeling at the wheel is when you should consider getting them replaced.

I'm not an expert on the subject, but I don't think that it would - at least, not near as noticeable as, say, warped rotors.

I CAN tell you that my brakes/rotors were warped before the ball joint replacement, and they're still warped. LOL

I can't speak for others, but it depends upon the difficulty in getting parts off. My old LBJs/OTREs were somewhat rusted, and I didn't pre-treat them with PB Blaster or anything.

That being said, it took 3 hours to get them off and get the new ones replaced. I only ended up paying like $140 or something; I got them installed @ the hobby shop (kinda a misnomer - they're fully certified techs) on Fort Leonard Wood for $47.50/hour plus some other stuff I got done.
 
Time for a thread revival! Tried researching this but it seems like its a questions that has never been asked before, maybe I'm thinking too outside the box, but we'll see. I do my research and I know that the taco lbj's and otre's are interchangeable BUT here is a another question.... If I went with the 555 brand lbj's and otre's for a tacoma (in case someone doesn't know it has been said that 555 is the japanese company that manufactures OEM parts) will they fit on our runners? I hope my question is clear, I'm not trying to ask if the taco OEM parts are interchangeable but I want to know if the same thing applies to the 555 ones I can buy online. Maybe I'm being paranoid but I just want to make sure that for some really odd reason the 555's may not fit or are not as beefy (the main reason for this swap) as the OEM's. Main reason I'm asking is because the taco 555 replacements are about 30 bucks cheaper than the OEM's. There is also a few bucks to be saved with the otre's as well. Hopefully that wasn't too confusing! Thanks in advance.

Yes; my parts are OEM Tacoma LBJs and OTREs; I've been running them for about 5K now. I don't think it matters who the manufacturer of the parts is.

I have to be honest, though, and say that due to the 'criticality' of these things (in other words, how critical they are to safe operation of the vehicle) I wouldn't skimp on the price. I'd get straight OEM if I were you.
