Ball mount for 2004 V8

When I bought my used 2004 V8, I didn't get the ball mount with it.

After some searching on the forums, I found out that a standard mount may not work out due to the spare tire. I also read about the hidden hitches.

So should I go ahead and order the Toyota mount (Ball Mount (PT228-89445)) or should I look into one of these hidden hitches?

Oh, I don't have anything to tow yet, my wife is looking forward to getting a travel/camping trailer. Something reasonably small, hopefully less than 20 feet.

I just got a 2003 v8 and have the same problem . I took my trusty Ryobi angled grinder with lithium battery with a metal wheel and put the ball mount in a vise and quickly dispatched of about 1.5 inches of the ball mount, then I painted the end with two coats of rustoleum . It fits great now. I thought about drilling another hole more distally but I was afraid it would upset my towing dynamics (longer lever arm, effectively more tongue weight. An angled grinder costs about 90 bucks with a lithium battery and charger.
 
Reese / Draw-Tite makes a hitch for the 4runner that fits perfectly (with our without spare tire). Mine came with the Toyota hitch.

Beside the hitch you may want to get an external transmission cooler. This is essential if you do a lot of towing.

I'll have to look into the Reese. Do they advertise it as fitting the 4runner or is it simply a matter of getting the right size?
I do have a dealer nearby where I was able to order the missing button for my backseat so I can get the Toyota through him.

I've been reading about the transmission coolers. Seems most have been getting by without one, but I'll do a bit more investigating.

My Dad had a 32 foot Holiday Rambler... now that's huge!!! He towed that with his F-250.

I think something around 17 feet would do it for us. It's just going to be the 2 of us, no kids or anyone else.

I also bought my 03 V8 used, and it did not come with the OEM Toyota 4Runner ball mount.

I was able to find an inexpensive, used (barely!) one on eBay.

You do have the right part number (PT228-89445), so when searching for a ball mount on eBay make sure that the seller has this one and not another Toyota one.

Check the classifieds here as well - someone might have one for sale.

Wow, talk about timing!

I just found a decent deal on eBay! Searched using the part# PT228-89445, and a couple of nice deals popped up. Should be arriving next week. :)

Yep, it does. I looked around and found that out.

You can see it pretty clearly here, right below the horn.
