Banging/clunking noise after brake replacement

Replaced pads and rotors on the 4R over the weekend. Went for a drive and there's a loud banging from the rear. Oddly enough, the noise disappears once you hit 20-25mph and it doesn't come back until the car is parked. It doesn't make the noise at any point during braking or normally driving. I've noticed the only time it will start is if it was parked with parking brake engaged. If I park without engaging parking brake and then go for a drive, it doesn't do it.

Went and rechacked to make sure caliper bolts and caliper carrier bolts are tight. Made sure all the new brake hardware is still in place. couldn't see anything obvious.

The ebrake system on these trucks are very problematic. There are two pins that hold on the ebrake shoes. They're secured with springs. Overtime the pins straighten out and come into contact with the back of the axle flange area. You're in for a fun time!! ask me how I know...

Sounds like a good time. So maybe just best to order new brake shoes and hardware?

generally it can be fixed with new hardware alone. The shoes dont need to be replaced unless theyre low on material or something is overtly wrong with them. Its really just those pins

When I looked at them, they were down to about 50%, so if I go replacing hardware might as well do the shoes.

Just weird that it started making the noise after i replaced pads and rotors. Must have pulled on the shoe a little when I was removing the rotor which put stress on the pin(s).

When you take off the rear rotor it generally causes this issue. Pins get pulled and straightened out

Generally if you just pull the rear rotors off without backing off the adjuster for the parking brake shoe you will almost always damage the mounting hardware for the shoes.

Just an FYI, do not get an aftermarket hold down kit. I have been fighting a noise for years in the back. I shimmed the pins with a cut washer and it worked for the moment. I bought a OEM set and the pins were 1/8 shorter and they work perfectly.

The aftermarket set i bought was Carlson.

I'll have to keep that in mind. This is my first truck-ish vehicle, all others just had the regular disc brake in the rear.

Just wanted to update this thread in case someone comes across it in future...

Replaced parking brake shoes with all new hardware and noise went away.

Will need to adjust the parking brake some more as it's not holding at all now. But at least noise is gone.
