Basic Off Roading question

I plan on taking my runner to Hollister Hills (northern california) after my cornfed and 265/70/17 are installed. BUT I plan on also powder coating my wheels black. My question is, when off roading do you find yourself scratching up your wheels? I don't want my newly coated black wheels showing silver scratches

My rule of thumb is:

If it can be dinged, it should not be blinged.

If you've got the extra cash, buy a set of steel rims and put some offroading tires on them for use on the dirt and rocks. Without a doubt, you will get those shiny black jewels all scratched up because of two reasons:

1. Offroading is FUN, and it is a total buzzkill if, in the midst of that fun, you are worried about your bling.

2. Because, again without a doubt, you will say to yourself as you enter your offroading destination, "Nothing should happen to my [insert blinged mod here]."

More than likely you will get scratches on them... If you are on gravel roads, you would probably be okay, but remember you will also get some of that nasty brake dust all over and that stuff is very corrosive. If you venture into any place with branches, 6+" high rocks, water, you will definitely scratch them, and like previously mentioned... You don't want to be thinking about those wheels and all the scratches while offroading. Find a set of steel wheels for the off-roading stuff.

If you go through any mud, expect your rims to get scratched. Mud likes to hid little rocks and when you're spinning your wheels going through the stuff, guess what happens

I've got scratches on my wheels, but I think it has been from brush along the trail. Most California trails are going to scratch both wheels and body because of our stiff, dry brush. You can also get scratches from rocks (big rocks), but you might suffer much worse from those. The idea of mud scratching the wheels makes sense, but I don't do a lot of mud.

Hollister hills has some brushy trails, but you can certainly have a little fun and avoid the brush if you want to. At least that's the way I remember it.

Find a set of black steel rims and put your off-road tires on it. No worries about scratching rims or wearing our good off-road tires too soon. keep the streeters for when you get back home.
