Bass Options

Hi Folks,

I am new to the forum having just picked up my 04 4Runner last Saturday. Let me start out by saying I LOVE this truck and look forward to some off roading when the weather gets warmer here in NY.
At any rate I just wanted to see what options are out there in terms of getting more bass into the 4runner. The stock stereo just sounds awful so I will be putting in the system I took out of my old car. I had a JL 10w7 in my old car that supplied all the bass a guy/gal could ever want. However its a freaking huge and took up my entire trunk. Not wanting to kill all the cargo space in my truck like this, I was curious what others were doing to get more bass into the truck without losing tons of cargo space. I know there is a panel in the inside far passenger corner I think there is an 8in sub in there now has anyone replaced that with a real sub ( maybe a 10in sub) if so how did it sound. Thanks for any replies.

I'm owning a 97 Runna, getting ready to install a 10w7, I didn't realize it was going to "kill" cargo room!!? What were the dimension for that box. Did you try looking at the stealth boxes Jl has?
 
I haven't looked into any stealth boxes just yet but certainly plan on. Just looking for other options at the moment. I would like to get something that I can stowe away in that rear corner panel. I know someone who has one in an Explorer but have yet to hear it. Maybe this weekend. As for your question here is a link to the bo that I have. It has the dimensions listed there. Its the High output box. I love the bass this thing kicks but its just too large to use.

That's weird that you needed such a large box for the JL. They have always been known to work great in smaller enclosures. I think JL recommends 1.25 for sealed and 1.5 for ported. Why not make your own out of MDF. That way you can figure out where you want it exactly and add an area to mount the amp.
 
The Amp I was thinking about mounting behind the panel where the factory woofer is located. I haven't pulled the panel off yet to check for room but that was my first idea. My second was under one of the rear seats but again I haven't checked for space. I just got the truck last week and have only been in it twice so I really don't know all that much yet.

As for the enclosures .... I would hesitate to stray from the factory enclosures. JL puts alot of R&D into the design of them and know what is best for optimal bass. I am not sure what kind of bass notes to expect when you start to deviate from what they reccommend. That being said I am sure it would sound great in a smaller enclosure but probably not as good as it does in the factory enclosure. Plus I love the thing to death and will probably install it in a car again one day.

Have you folks had much luck in making enclosures out of MDF? If anyone has plans and is willing to share them I would love to see them.

Those low profile infinities look quite promising. I agree that the JL enclosure that goes over the inside rear wheel well is far too overpriced for what it is and GYoter your box look great. I suppose I am going to look around and see whats out there perhaps on of those Alpine type R subs in a single small enclosure is enough to satisfy me for the time being. Its small enough to move into the backseat if need be. Thanks for all the feedback folks!
