Bass Pro buys out Cabelas

Depends on which side of the equation you land on really.......but not generally a good thing for consumers. On the same token, I gave semi-pro bassin' locally a shot for about 5 years many years ago and even though I stopped competing due to family demands, I still can't find the specific fishing stuff I would use from either BP or Cabela's for well over almost two decades. At one time their catalogs could provide you with specialized fishing tackle and equipment but now I would generally only buy camping and outdoor equipment (and clothing) from them......not even electronics really.

Cabelas overextended themselves fiscally by building too many stores and their return on investment from some of those stores was in the red. They had a working model with the catalog, and Web site but got greedy when they saw how well Bass Pro Shops was doing with their stores.

I have a number of Cabela's jackets and pants. Most were well made but those which were made in the PRC has not stood up to the test of time very well.

I used to work for Sports Authority at their corporate headquarters. This wasn't completely unexpected in the retail world.

Bass Pro has a much bigger and more developed internet presence. E-Commerce is the way of the future, but you can survive IF you have an ability to draw crowds into the store. Bass Pro does that with workshops, "kids days", free classes, etc. And every Bass Pro is uniquely decorated based on the customers and geographic region. I would never stop at a Cabela's if I was on a roadtrip, but when I moved from TN to CO, I passed 3 or 4 Bass Pro Shops (right by the highway) and i definitely stopped to stretch my legs at every one of them.

Well considering I live in the city were BP national HQ is I still try amd stay out of there shop at all costs. As said above the crap is just that almost every time anymore. They are not what they were 15 years ago. Anything fishing I buy elsewhere unless other stores are out of stock then I'm forced to buy from them. I hope this will be a good thing but time will tell. BP has been doing this also in the boat world. When they bought Ranger boats they took out 5 other boat brands the Nitro competed against.

I have shopped in both stores for years. When you go into BPS the employees are rude and act like they are doing you a favor when assisting. My experience with Cabelas has been the employees are always upbeat and helpful. The only reason I still go into BPS is convenience. Living in the south there have been no brick and mortar Cabelas stores until recently. I could site examples from both stores but I think you get my point. I think the founder of Cabelas dying two years ago may have something to do with the sale. According to a recent news release both companies are about the same size, but have just competing in the same markets.

I always preferred Cabela's over Bass Pro as far as stores go. That said, they do sell basically the same stuff. And in the end, I usually shop online for sporting goods anyway.

If they are keeping the brand, then we likely won't notice any difference anyway.

I'm from Nebraska near Cabela's HQ and have kept up with it in the local news a little.

Basically there was an investment company(can't remember the name now) that bought a major share of Cabela's stock over the last year or 2 knowing that they would start courting potential buyers. I wouldn't call it a "hostile" take over since it wasn't Bass Pro buying the stock, but this is the investment company's business model. Buy a lot of shares of a smaller/acquirable company at a fair price and then prep the company for an acquisition, sell their shares at a healthy margin after the announcement and then move on to the next one. They didn't even wait for the actual merger before they sold most of their stake below the buy-out price. Missed out on a measly $8 million or something like that.

On 2nd thought, I guess you could call it a hostile take over by the investment company.
