Battery light question

OK guys so when I turn the ignition to the ON position (not started) and let the finger go off, should the battery light stay Connor should it go off? I know I need a new battery (cranks kinda slow) but I'm just wondering if it should stay on or go off. Could someone check for me? Thanks!

I think the light stays on if you engage the ignition but don't actually start the engine. Once you start the engine it should go off. Is this the question you are asking about? I will check in a bit if you don't find the answer.
 
the light comes on whenever there is a draw from the battery however, no altinator charge recharging it. basicly a warning light telling you your using only battery power and its not being recharged. hince why it goes off after ignition. theoreticly it should come on also if your altinator ever goes bad, i havent experienced this yet but i would think its wired in to warn about that failure.

the light should stay on.
