This comment from Youtube stuck out to me ...

The energy in these caps is too small to make it safe for all usage scenarios.
One problem is that some cars have electronics that uses a constant energy for alarm system, radio door locks etc.
This capacitor pack holds some 10Wh energy at 12V but you can't actually recover it all as the voltage wont stay high enough. A lead battery typically comes with 16 Wh per Pound or in the case of this video, 320Wh or so. That's 30+ times less reserve for use of radio/light when engine is off.

I'd love to hear what an EE major (they are here on the forum) thinks of this one. Personally I agree with the commentator.

If you, like most people, have 0 electrical background (who is Ohm and why did he pass laws??) then it is probably a good idea not to mess with this type of stuff.
 
I'm an EE and find this interesting but not a solid long-term solution per the quote Brian refers above. If you are a hobbyist and like to experiment then this might be worth trying out but otherwise I don't see it as really that useful. I'd also have some safety concerns just because there's been no real engineering or long-term studies done seeing this thing in a wide variety of conditions.

Nope. Don't leave your lights on for too long. Capacitors are not designed to hold charges for a long periods of times. The capacitor charges and discharges extremely fast; batteries don't. You also risk damaging your electrical circuits through-out your vehicle. That is not worth gambling the integrity of your electrical system. Especially since it's a whole lot of ass pain to troubleshoot electrical gremlins. It's a big risk for such a small reward.

Yes. If the capacitor was discharged the initial surge current as it charged could blow the fused link from the alternator. You would definitely need a current-limiting resistor [a HUGE one] between the alternator and capacitor. Overall, not a practical solution. If it were car makers would jump on it since it would be much cheaper and "greener" than batteries.

Battery - long term


Capacitor has the ability to supply huge amount of amps in a short amount of time. Nanoseconds.

This is why it seams to start better.


Plus, If the alternator was to loose its regulating capabilities and over charge the capacitors, they could blow up like a stick of dynamite.
