Battle of the Rats & Squirrels!

We used to love watching the hummingbirds in our yard. Then my sister brought her cat to live there. The hummingbirds all started disappearing, we couldn't figure out why. Then one day I was watching a hummingbird and her cat ate it. That bastard, I chased him around with it still buzzing in his mouth underneath our little cabin. No more cats in our yard, I don't know how many billions of birds domestic cats kill each year.

I have a solution that is 100% effective. At the local electronics store they were selling strobe lights. It wasn't cheap at $50 for an LED one. It also needs a 12V supply which I had available since I keep all old transformers. It seems to work in the little cabin, until I can rat-proof it to actually keep them from getting in. Just put it in your engine bay and it will work, guaranteed. Even 30 seconds of that flashing light (once every couple seconds) is enough to drive you nuts.

Also rat poison is a big nono in our area, the local paper tells everyone not to use it. The rats will wander into the neighbours' yard then die, then their dogs will eat it and die.

With all due respect, what I’m saying is rodents seem to have variations in their behaviors. It’s like each one can be slightly different. I have seen the studies and yes capsaicin can be an effective deterrent. It’s not 100% the studies I have seen say 80-90%.

Just because a big corporation like Honda motors sells it? Does make it a magic solution to the problem. Rodents have been chewing stuff up since the dawn of time and they will continue, that much is certain.
