Because drilling into your dash hurts

So I've seen a few members post how-to's on super sophisticated bolt-on cell phone holders with grips that look like medieval torture devices (and/or "adult accoutrements" but i digress). Here's a sleek, simpler, cost effective solution. May I present the Nite Ize Steelie.

Install is an arduous 3 minutes... or maybe 5 if you can't get the box open. Make sure the magnet is centered on the phone. It won't fall off, neither the magnet or the phone. I have another mount on my boat and it stayed put in 4ft chop and 20kt winds. The rubber pad holds it imposition so it won't slip down on the steel sphere if you hit bumps.

The other advantage with the magnet is it gets the phone up off the table so if you spill anything it'll be safe (no comments from the samsung crowd please). I'm using one with the tape base for my iPod. I didn't know they had made a vent mount. The tape mount has been there for over 2 years now and is holding strong. And the magnet is strong enough to hold a small tablet.

IMHO Anything mounted to vent's fin hurts the vent. I mean fins are not designed to carry weight of the phone bouncing while you dive through uneven surface. The only solid vent mount is the one made by ProClip. If grabs not by fin but by the vent sides itself. But it may be just me.:spider:

I saw this at Bass Pro Shop the other I day. I like the idea. Vent mount is good because when your phone charges and it gets too hot (I live in central tx it's always hot) the vent cools down the phone so your battery doesn't get too hot and charges faster. I didn't really think of the weight issue too much.

It doesn't pressure the vent at all, granted you limit the mobility of the vent, but neither the mount nor phone bounce at all.

My Samsung Galaxy S4 inside Otter case weights 7 oz. Vent fins are designed to hold maybe 0.1oz of force (pushing air). Just saying :kiss:


But don't take my word as a fact. I'm just that kind of guy who for example doesn't believe in cable tie which is used by everybody in car wiring job. I am probably OCD :der:

I didn't want to mount my steel ball to anything on the dash so it's mounted to the top of my "smokers package". I bought the ashtray that slips into a cup holder and use it for loose change. Mounted the steel ball to the top, put the cup in the rear cup holder and run the power cord to the power port in the console.

This is what I use for my phone with a case. The magnet that goes on the rear inside of your case is so slim you won't even notice it.

Just put the magnet on the case. I have one on my life proof case. No issues at all. I also had a "speck" case that i drilled a hole through so i could put the magnet directly on the phone. It actually worked really well, but i hated the case so I'm glad i didnt put the magnet on it.

And again, for everyone who mentioned it'd bounce and wobble, it won't. The only time it'll change position is if the charging cable is attached. I remedy that by putting the cable around the back of the phone. Ugh... I'm gonna have to post more pics aren't I...
