Been tempted to buy a 5th gen

Have a 3rd Gen now. Can't really say one downside besides its still just a truck, everything's perfect on it and still under 100k miles but I would love something a little bigger. Fit people a little better and be amazing to drive yet alone on highway trips. Smoother and quieter I'm sure. But has anyone else gone one direction or the other and regretted or never looked back. Only downside to a new one is that price tag! Mine was cheap and owes me nothing! But I could get a pretty penny if I sell it I believe.

I would be looking at a TRD pro and just leaving it alone. Or go Trail edition and look into a small lift like Icon Coil overs and 285's regardless. Not sure everyone input on the KDSS of its a must or not. I am yet to test drive one but we do own a 2015 TRD sport Tacoma (wife's) so I am aware they are awesome.

Any input?

Had a 2000 sport edition. It was anemic. Got the TRD supercharger with smaller pulley, 7th injector, TRD headers, URD crankshaft pulley, tranny cooler, level 10 valve body upgrade, and finally got it to drive like a normal vehicle with 240 rwhp on the Dyno. The 5th gen is still anemic, (given its weight), but better out of the box than the 3rd gen. Smooth, very quiet, nice creature comforts. Same Toyota reliability. You won't look back at the decision and regret it.

Dang. All expensive replies. I know it's a large debate. Or a small one in my searches but if I did this I want just about all I can get as far as comfort goes. Is the trail or trail premium a better route than a PRO model? I of course like the pro. And I know the pro suspension is not a big deal just a nice change from factory. But if I had that I can't see doing much more lift. If I went trail I am sure I'll end up lifting a bit. I really do NOT want to take a new perfect driving rig and make it what I end up with now which is vibrations. Wobbles and whatnot. My OCD is getting a little tired of the past 10 years of jeeps and toyotas. Just looking for a nice DD then I'm not asked. Why the hell do you drive a 18 year old Toyota haha. We all know the passion of the answer but.

Is this something we are all expected to be a big deal. I feel like the recent body changes were big my only fears is how much longer will they keep the true frame on design of a real rig and not turn this into some cab chassis of a mini van.

More motor would tempt me plenty. As well as diesel option!

I doubt the 6th gen will be a significant improvement in terms of motor. Probably add another gear to make it a 6 speed. Perhaps some weight trimming or something and a change in the looks department. My guess is that it may be worth waiting to see since you have a good rig to ride for now. If it is compelling, go for it. If nothing else you may be able to pick up a 5th gen for slightly less money (although I am unsure what if any deal you'll find on the Pro given their limited run and inventory).

TRDPro is a great looking vehicle. I believe it only has an extra inch lift up front. You could easily get better aftermarket products to duplicate that.
What the pro doesn't have is KDSS and a moonroof which are offered on the Trail Premium and would be pricey to add to a pro.
When KDSS was offered on the trails... I didn't hop on that bandwagon. Got KDSS on this new premium and now I wish the '10 had it as well. On road manners are much better with KDSS.
KDSS a must? Only you can say for sure by test driving it.

I've had a ton of 3rd Gens and I love them. Just got my wife a '15 SR5 Premium in February. Now I'm looking for a 5th gen for myself too. IMO, the 5th Gen is the new 3rd Gen if that makes sense. I was never a real fan of the 4th Gen but the 5th Gen seems to have hit the nail on the head again.

Do you need a 5th Gen? Probably not. But it sounds like it would fit the bill of a very nice DD and still very capable when you need it to be. I also think the TRD Pro is awesome looking and almost bought one last week but decided to sleep on it. I'm glad I did, I can't really justify the extra money for one.

Former 3rd Gen owner here too and I loved it, period. Now have a 5th Gen and I love it also. Can't go wrong with either one. Test drive one...but be warned you will fall hard for it lol.

2nd thru 5th

Had ever gen but 1st & would probably still have a 2nd if they had the 3.4 engine swap before I got it off to nephew . Loved the true tailgate(beer&softballparkinglot). Really liked 3rd the best but again size matters so now I have a 4th(sons) & have 5th which we just did our 1st road trip , seats are more than adequate , cruised at 80 most of the time decent mileage with tires & lift . Now if we were Toyota we'd take the best we like from all 4 gens & have bad ass 4r :wave::art: :wtf: :hand:

I have almost 85k on mine, just sent in my last payment, and love every minute behind the wheel as my daily driver. My verrry capable daily driver. And unless the 6th gen absolutely blows me away I expect to own it for at least another 5 or 10, even as a second vehicle to keep the miles from climbing too quickly...

Keep the 3rd and buy a 5th. Then drink a fifth.... and revel in your good fortune!

I went from a 3rd gen to a 5th gen. It's a BIG change in driving characteristics. The 5th gen is 1,000lbs heavier. It's a tank. It's a lot more powerful, but with the weight it doesn't feel a whole lot different. It's definitely quieter and more comfortable for daily driving. It's still a very basic vehicle. No auto headlights or smart key etc. until you get into a limited. I had a limited 3rd gen and the fit and finish even at 200k was better than my '15.

If you want it to handle well on the road - get a Trail with KDSS. Drive one back to back with a non KDSS model and compare the two. IMO, the TRD Pro isn't worth the $. The Trail Premium is the better buy. You can add a better suspension for $1000 by buying 6112/5160 set of shocks/struts. Add some tires and you've got a TRD Pro with KDSS for less.

There are days I wish I had my 3rd gen back. I liked the size of it better. It was more capable offroad due to the weight and size. Easier to park in the city. Stuff like that. I really wish we could just buy a 5th gen shrunk down to the size of a 3rd gen.

I went from a 2000 4Runner Highlander to a 2011 TE I miss my old 4Runner because of sentimental values, but I love my TE. Couldn't be happier.

Trail Edition Premium if you want a sun roof + KDSS

Dont waste your time on the pro. for the cost of some simple suspension stuffs/rims/rubber you will get a better more adjustable suspension STILL cheaper than a pro. The pros are nice looking but the cost VS performance compared to just doing a lift and rims yourself... cmon.

I got my TE w/KDSS for a pretty good price. You wont regret it trust me.

I keep reading this comment and it makes no sense. Do you think they are going to be magically otherwordly superior somehow?

Tell you what - I have about 33 years of car buying experience and the BEST car is always the final year of production. By then they have worked all the bugs out (and yes, there are bugs in a totally new design - even for Toyota). My 2002 was excellent and the last year for the 3rd gen. My 2015 has thus far been flawless.

And nobody knows what the 2016 will look like. What if it comes out and its butt ugly like the 2003?

OP - if you like the 2015 go buy one. They are fantastic trucks.

Trail and pro are barely different and unless you want the KDSS and crawl features, go with a SR5 premium. Ride is pretty much the same on the SR5 and trail. I had a 10' trail and decided on the SR5 this time because I never used the trail goodies.
