Before you rule in your tick as an exhaust manifold leak

Try swapping to full synthetic. Just got pennzoil full synthetic from jiffy lube and my "manifold tick" is gone. I was 99.9% convinced it was an exhaust manifold leak.

Sounds like someone may have been over the interval for an oil change and experiencing lifter tick.

How did you go about incorrectly diagnosing a manifold crack? Or was the assumption that the ticking must have been the manifold crack since that's what's common?

The 2UZ is a little ticky when you lift the hood. I think that's normal.

The difference between the normal tick and the header tick is the header tick gets a lot louder upon acceleration.

That's the reason why I thought it was the manifold tick. It 'seemed' to get louder. Maybe it was my mind playing tricks on me. Oh well, I'm happy it's gone now.

Just an FYI, both the V8 and the V6 are over head cams engines, and as such have no lifters, camshaft is in direct contact with the top of the valves, there is however a "cup" on top of the valve/spring assembly, to adjust the valve there's a specific sized shim under the cup to achive the proper valve clearance.

If I were phyically or otherwise unable to do my own oil change I wouldn't hesitate to take mine to a quick oil change business as long as I watched them, made sure the correct oil and a quailty filter was used, and also checked for any leaks afterwards, but I would do that even if I took it anywhere.....or even did it myself, after all an oil change is not all that technical and most anyone with basic mechanical knowledge can do it,IMHO.

Make sure you use a factory filter. The anti drainback valve is much better.
