Belt and water pump

Taking a survey on what to do. After I purchased my 06 V8 4 Runner, I contacted the dealership that was on the door sticker. Their records show a leaking water pump in April 2015 with no repair action accomplished in their shop. I didn't see evidence of leaking and I drove it 500 miles. However, since I also don't know if the timing belt has been replaced recently, I thought I would just replace belt and pump. I would assume if the pump would have been replaced they would have replaced the belt also, but you never know. Anyway, today I removed the thermostate housing from the water pump, and I noticed a paper gasket was installed. From what I have been reading so far, they didn't put a gasket in that area from the factory. Next, I rotated the engine to view the timing belt, and I can still see writing on the belt. Putting the two together I am kind of thinking the belt and pump have been replaced recently. What do you guys think? I haven't torn it apart yet, just housing and right cover. 134k on the miles.

I would assume the belt has been done with the WP. Although since you have an interference engine, it might not be worth the gamble. Myself, I enjoy piece of mind!
 
I had my t-belt/water pump replaced recently and the belt that was on for the past 100k looked new. Don't trust appearance!

Yes I agree, better "I didn't have to do it" than "I wish I would have done it"

I guess the ink still on the belt makes me believe it hasn't been on that long.

Well, just an update. I pulled both cam covers off, and there is a gates belt on there now. The writing and part numbers are clear as a bell, and the belt is not smooth and shiny. I think it was replaced about 800 miles ago, along with the water pump. Even if it was replaced at the 90k interval, I still have 50k miles till it is due again. That will be 10 years or more for me. Thanks for listening.

Glad you got it figured out!
 
And just use a FIPG (like a permatex red RTV) for the water neck like Toyota says to do. Clean it well and a little bead in the groove is all it needs.

Thanks, I had a question about that. I see there is a metal/rubber gasket available for that area. Would you still recommend just the FIPG?
 
No gasket from Toyota = No gasket for me when it went back together = no leaks. There was another member on here with a coolant leak that had the same issue and it was fixed with proper FIPG. Follow instructions on the tube to let it skin/cure/torque etc.

Is it worth risking going with a non Toyota part for something so important as the timing belt? Are the other parts in these online kits(like Amazon) Toyota parts or aftermarket parts?
