Best All Around A/T tire for 4runner?

In the YEARS that i had BFG AT KO, i have NEVER had my stability control light blink while driving in the rain...NEVER. And you guys know me, when things go wrong on a product, i pounce on it! :D Of course, i drove reasonably in the rain and knew my limits in my SUV.

And lets face it, reputation and sale numbers are what separate BFG AT KO from the rest of the playing field.

I've had plenty of wheel time on trucks shod with BFGs and their resistance to hydroplaning leaves a bit to be desired and they just seem plain squirelly when turning on wet pavement while my Duratracs (entering their 3rd winter) simply feel more planted and don't jump around as much when you hit a sudden patch of puddles.

Plus not everybody has the Duratracs and they look better on a 4wd truck IMO.

Sales just show that these tire shops automatically push BFGs on people that don't even need that much of a tire just like when my mom went to Discount and told them her 4Runner would never go off road and she needed a solid all around truck tire and BFGs were the first tire out of the salesman's mouth and from my driving experiences BFGs are a so-so tire when on road but I can't argue about their durablity when off road and that's where they shine but since I drive 90% of the time on pavement BFGs didn't suit my driving style.

This may seem like a strange request but I like the agressive look of BFG AT and Goodyear Duratracs and even the Nitto Trail Grapplers, but I do 95% driving on the street and wet. 2-3 trips to the snow in California on mostly plowed roads.

Looking for the agressive look but also want good traction in wet and dry. I know if I want the best traction go with Michelins LTX but I really like the agressive look of the 3 mentioned. I have a set of Spidertrax coming this week and will install them with what ever tire I get.

So what would be a good "Off Road Poser" tire for a city slicker like me??

Thanks in advance . . .

Michelin AT2s or Bridgestone Revo2s

+1 for the Duratracs. I just got mine and they look MUCH more aggresive then my buddy's BFG's in person. Once his BFG's wear out he is going to replace them with Duratracs and he's been eyeing them for a long time.

RonM, you are also the person that used to think Nitto TG was the greatest thing since slice bread! :D

Where did you buy your TSR's?

I got them at tire-buyer.com. Installed they were around $900.

They have a 10 ply and a 6 ply version. I went 6 ply as I wanted the white letter and they're lighter. Considering I'm on using them on rocks or anything they've been just fine. I'm loving these things so far... after riding in it, I think my brother is going for them next time over his Cooper STT's. I posted the difference in sound levels, and it's only about a 5db difference which is nothing.

I had Revo 1's on my 1995 4Runner and they were definitely a good tire, although a lot of people had trouble with tread wear...

I agree; I have that issue on 1996 4Runner with REVO 1, however REVO 2 appears to be 100 % in that regards.

Firestone Destination A/T

I got the Firestone Destination A/T based on reviews at TireRack. I've had them about 30K miles so far, and they've been great.

I drive mostly paved roads, but my driveway is a 1/2 mile long dirt road with a steep hill. Maine winters are fun - then mud season. I use 4 low and diff lock every day in the winter.

I also took these down some long muddy, wet logging roads, and never had any problems ( Shirley Tote Road ).

lol,yes I did and the TGs are still superior on road than the BFGs but the Duratracs possess a little less on road handling and grip than the Nittos but are more in the class of a BFG when off road so now I'm even more happy but I do still think Nittos are a solid tire for a DD with occasional off road intentions but mine still held up to all the off road abuse I put them through over 5 years.

The one thing I didn't like about the Destination A/T was driving my friend's FJ with them on it. I'd take corners how I normally do in the 4runner and the tires were screaching around the corner. It could be the pig of an FJ doing some of that though.

Go with bfg's. They look great on runners. I've tried to go with tracks & nittos, but bfgs a/t's are where its at

I've got almost 5000 miles on my Big-O Bigfoot AT's, and they've been great on pavement, dust, sand, and rock, and quiet on the freeway to boot. I don't know if they'll last as long as the BFG's my buddy runs (68,000 and looking good), but the price and unconditional warranty persuaded me to give them a try.

That's a good looking tire on great looking rig!! How many miles on those tires?

BFGs do last and wear like rocks but I don't want to spend several years driving on rocks since alot of owners (including myself) have noticed the rubber compund seems to get hard and lose more grip after 40,000 miles on the tires. My Nittos stayed grippy wil I replaced them at 46k and still had a little more life to go.

BFGs kill off road and they simply have the best lettering on a tire period but that's not enough to make me want another set for my daily driver.

Whatever tire you choose will look better with the Spidertrax spacers. I was talked into them and am so glad that I was.

Depends on the angle. From dead on in the front - the lower ball joint on the LCA looks so puny that going over any significant terrain will rip the entire spindle off the car.

Looking for the agressive look...

As foreign as it is to me to talk about tire appearance, I have noticed that some tires photograph much better than others. The Duratrac sidewall bling, for instance, seems to photograph very well. I've noticed that it's very hard for me to capture the sort of two-tone sidewall of the Revo 2s. It's Impossible to capture both the tread and sidewall in one picture that comes anywhere close to the real world look. Revo 2 is probably not aggressive looking enough for you anyway, but I imagine the same principle holds true in varying degrees with other tires. So any chance you get to see a tire in person, I'd say take it.
