to replace the lame stock duelers? I'm talking about something that can be used everyday on the road and still be able to endure a week offroad.

I had 285/70/17 destination A/Ts (p-metric) on the Xterra, and thought they were great, but with the 4runner, i don't want to loose mileage, as a larger tire and prettey much any LT tire are out.

Again, the 4runner will be my wifes daily driver 350+ days a year, and the other 15 (maybe more) I plan to be taking serious road trips that include lots of highway miles, a fair amount of forest service roads and some decent 4x4 trails along the way.....

I haven't bought my set of tires yet but I've done a ton of research and I'm going with either 285/70/17 or 265/70/17 destination A/T p metric on mine. I looked at many factors including but not limited to: Looks, millage, ride comfort, ice/snow, rain/hydroplane, and several more. I narrowed it down to 3 tires that were in the running... Firestone Destination AT, Bridgestone Revo 2, and Michelin LTX AT 2. I knocked Michelin out cuz it cost too much and didn't look aggressive enough and picked Dest cuz it looks better, more ppl on this forum have picked that, and they had better tread wear rating on tire rack than the Revos. Better overall rating.

I also used Tire Rack for the basis on my decision. I decided on the Kumho SAT's. I was also considering Michelins AT2, Firestone AT, and Revo 2's. The Kumho's have the highest rating on tirerack. About a month after I put them on, we got a snowstorm with about 18" of snow w/ drifts ranging from 2 to 4 feet. Virtually no problems getting around in that snow. The Kumho's were the best tires I have ever had on anything. This is my wifes DD. So I wanted a tire that was quiet, road well, and looked better than the crap my runner came with. Kumho's although relatively a newly designed tire(prob been out for about a year) comes with a 60k warranty. Only have about 3k miles on them, but very happy with my decision.

I have been researching the same for the last month, Im in the same boat. Im leaning towards the Firestone Dest. AT but I was thinking LT instead of the P for better offroading if needed (little firmer ride) C load. The other was the Revo2 and maybe the Yoka Geolanders AT. I was torn on the Terra Grapplers, BF AT KO and Kumho's but digging deeper into reviews I have kinda ruled them out. I do get alot of snow and do need a good AT that works in Snow. Seems the Revo2 might be the best for snow. Any thoughts on this I think would help us all in this Thread. Also deciding on size, leaning towards 275/70/17 no lift...seems that size works, 285 would need a lift from what I see. Thanks

285 doesn't need a lift but you do need to do a small mod that doesn't require cutting. It's suppose to be very simple but I haven't done it.

my issues with 275 is destination only comes in LT and I will only be doing off roading once in a while. I also don't want to take a big hit on gas millage. Especially since gas is looking to hit $5!! :cry2:

I really like the Michelin LTX A/T. I've heard good things about the Bridgestone Revo 2 and the Nitto TerraGrappler.

If you want to really step it up, go with the Goodyear DuraTrac.

roughly around there, it's a more stiff ride too which isn't a big concern for me. The weight difference is roughly 8lbs per tire for the 285 LT vs P which I have no idea how much of a difference that makes but I assume enough.

Like those but with 95% on the road and many 3 hr type trips, The hum and gas drop makes me nervious to buy.

I had Michelin LTX M/S on my Honda Ridgeline and they sucked in most Terrian (snow, mud, rain, some rock)....great on the road (smooth) but the rest was not great. Expensive, got about 44k miles on them before needing replacement (cracking issues too with many of them, not my set but most complained about it in the forums).

The DuraTracs aren't loud, but I probably wouldn't buy them if I had a family and drove several hours per trip.

The LTX's have a 60,000 mile warranty and I think it's pretty easy to get even more than that out of them.

If you're going mild AT you really can't beat the Nittos or Revos.

Sounds like you've decided on P-metric; good choice.

If you want to consider an A/T, I'd say Revo 2 would suit you very well. They were designed partially for decreased rolling resistance (something I was critical of when they first came out) but have very good wet traction, pretty good snow and off-road, and are really quiet -- which should presumably help keep the wife that way regarding your tire choice. They have a nylon cap ply (a comment that always receives the internet equivelent of a blank stare) which imparts an extra margin of high speed safety - never a bad thing on a high COG vehicle seeing lots of highway use.

They are, however, a new tire so getting a deep discount may be difficult.

I did see the new revo 2 has some sort of "eco" designation

I have had Michelin LTX, BFG A/T, REVOS and several other A/T tires and really am impressed so far with the Silent Armors. Silent Armors are great A/T tires that are a huge upgrade over stock. They ride well and look good for an A/T tire. Mine were under $600 installed. I don't know how much Kevlar is used in making these tires, but having some of that stuff in them can't be a bad thing. I couldn't be happier with these tires!

I've got my eye on a set of these Falken WildPeak A/Ts. This is the tire that the Project Back Country 4Runner is running. I've never ran a set before, but I think I'm going to give them a go.

for those of you going to other tires, how has your mileage been affected? I went from 265/60/17 to 285/70/17 on my xterra and lost at least 2-3 mpg. I don't want to do that again, but I am wondering if I should go up a little bit in size, for those long offroad trips we'll eventually do. I imagine with some good driving, 32" tires should be good enough for backcountry trips....

What about those of you with stock size, but heavier tires. The stockers are 39lbs, destination AT - 40lbs, Revo 2 - 41lbs, silent armor - 44lbs. all in P-metric sizes, the destination AT LT c-load is only 44lbs, same at the silent armors.

As you can see, I don't want to loose any MPG, especially because the wife drives a very short city route to work each day, with a bunch of stop lights, ie, the worst possible combination for mileage.

I'm certainly no expert, but so far I really like my LTX AT2's. I got LT tires because I wanted the stiffer sidewall for less sway when towing, or at least that was my logic. Running them at 44 PSI cold. Great traction in the snow, and not a rough ride at all, imo. With my '05 sport, the spare just barely fits. It's snug against the trailer hitch and there is only about 1/8" clearance for the panhard rod.
