Best Code reader for 3rd gens

I started with the latest, highest numbered version. I figured I could always go earlier if there was a problem. As far as I can tell, it's all good.

Got mine working today! Thanks for all the tips and step by step instructions on the install. Went smoothly on my old Dell XP LT.

So the first thing I wanted to see what the fuel consumption but when I click on the graph with the fuel gauge it says its not supported. What's up with that?

Guess I have to read up a little bit more.

Awesome, glad to hear you got it working too. As for the fuel consumption, I'm not sure. I've never messed with that, but I'll try to remember to look into it for you sometime. Another thing though, just to make sure yours is all working correctly, with the truck running, connect to the Engine and ECT computer, then click on Data List at the right and make sure it's all functioning properly. Often times people will think they have Techstream working, but things like that will fail. Most people eventually get it to work by uninstalling Techstream and installing other versions. It could be related to the javascript issue TheDurk mentioned as well. I'm really not sure. Again though, congrats on your Techstream!

I've been using this
Bluetooth ODB2 Reader along with the torque full app. I like it does everything I need! Im just finding a old android phone so I can always have it connected without having to use my personal phone to monitor everything when I'm driving since I use mine for GPS. I like it and recommend it!

I've been using an Ultra-Gauge for about 4 months now and love it!

They all come with that clip, and you can buy other style mounts in addition. I put some 3M double sided tape on mine and called it good. I tried mounting it on the windshield, but didn't like the way it looked. That was the best place to mount it in my opinion.

So, my BAFX code reader has randomly started drawing 0.06 amps while the engine is off. Had to unplug it since it was almost killing my battery overnight. Just a heads up.

A tablet is ideal…. If you really wanted to leave it hooked up, you can do some really cool displays, even integrating the accelerometer and GPS on the tablet. Graphically, it's way beyond...

You mention using the tablet with Torque…do you know how well it will display on an Android phone…for a 4" screen?

Seems like it'd be a cool way to integrate everything, although expensive.

Looking to buy a used 4runner but concerned about the dealership/person clearing codes before I arrive to check out the truck.

I have been reading up that you can see if codes have been reset by checking the I/M readiness within specific OBD-2 readers. Does anyone know if this trick works with 2000-2002 models?

Torque does have a readiness monitor that I've heard is actually very accurate. One of the default monitors on the main screen when you create a new profile.
Obviously, check the codes (make sure they didn't just pull the CEL bulb), and then use the monitor.

Works on any vehicle, if the various readiness items are not Ready, there is Only One reason why. Take a guess. :cowboy:

If you suspect it's been reset (could just be a low voltage battery or batt disconnected for servicing something else) take it on a good long test drive.

Most readiness indicator logic triggers after about 50-75 miles, try to mix in highway and in city driving. If a CEL is going to set it should after about 75 miles or so. Luck. :cowboy:

Sorry, I disgree. First, many of the tests on our trucks are two trip detection. Second, both EVAP and EMISSIONS tests can be very difficult to complete, even if you have followed the drive-cycles precisely. Either one can take a full tank of gas to complete.
