Best mods to increase MPG

I recommend resetting the ECU. Especially if you replaced the spark plugs recently. It might help.

Corvettes can tow. Some years ago....my cousin had a convertable corvette that he towed his 21 foot Checkmate (with a 235 outboard Johnson) with. It towed great!

Well, with a (slightly modified) truck engine, I would hope they could tow

Actually, I know lots of guys with hitch receivers on their Corvettes that tow a small trailer with tools and race tires on them to the AutoCross events.

Here's 2 that will overwhelm everything else. Mod your habits.
1. Don't warm it up for more than 5 minutes.
2. Don't run it over 70mph.

I havent replaced the plugs. Should I try the reset anyways? What are the consequences of the reset? I assume it would reset all the radio setting, but what about the auto window switches and stuff like that?

Where's the fun in that ? 18MPG combined city/highway with the way I drive makes the 4Runner one hell of a truck in terms of gas consumption.

I don't know why people are scratching their heads so much over this. It's not like they didn't know what they got into when they bought it. We should all be thankful we don't all get some ridiculous MPG rating like an Excursion or H2.

Yea you need to initialize the auto windows and sunroof. Also I thought you disconnect the + terminal, but I could be wrong. Also, I just drove my dad's 05 Accord, and although it gets good gas mileage, it is really slow compared to the 4Runner, the transmission isn't as smooth as the 4Runner, although I like how responsive it is at low speeds.

The Best Mod to increase MPG for me is to go on a Diet. If I could knock off 35lbs. that would be great not only for my health, but for the 4runners as well.

Actually a friend of mine has a excursion with the V10 and he get about 16mpg hwy, as far as my 4R I figured out that I get about 11.76mpg hwy., isn't that awsome, and everyone else is complaining about gas mileage. At least I don't live in a state where the gas is $3 a gallon.

Sorry to say, but you have something SERIOUSLY wrong with your vehicle.

A tune-up would pay itself back in no time on your vehicle.

Did a tune up, plugs, wires, cap and rotor, bvsv, tps, doing the timing chain this spring and fuel filter, probably going to pull the TB and clean that too.

200miles on a 17 gallon tank

IMO, technology plays a role allowing newer engines with larger displacements to make power and be more efficient. But my friend has said his uncle gets about 8-11mpg on his Excursion.

I think the V10 is a diesel and gets better mileage, though.

Mmm, nope... The Ford V10's are gassers... The PSD (Power Stroke [turbo]Diesel) is a V8.

Yep, the Ford "Powerstroke" turbodiesel is a V8 sourced from International/Navistar. Those made between for the 1994 to 2002 model years displace 7.3 liters, or 444 cubic inches; hence the T444e moniker when they are used in International trucks or buses.

The Powerstroke replaces the old non-turbo 7.3-liter block that was used for several years - and it displaced 6.9 liters before being bumped to 7.3L.

For 2002, Ford replaced the 7.3-liter Powerstroke turbodiesel with the DT365 - which, ironically, displaced 365 cubic inches or 6.0 liters. Though smaller, it actually put out more horsepower and torque than the DT444e. The next incarnation of the block will be slightly bigger in size (6.2 liters, I think) and is supposed to have overcome much of the troubles that were experienced by the 6.0 engine. Yes, they're still sourced from International. The newest engine is set to run on the new ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel (ULSD) that is now required in the United States.

Dodge puts six-cylinder Cummins 5.9L diesels in its trucks and GM's V-8 Duramax (displacing 6.6 liters) hails from Isuzu. Since engines come from another manufacturer, maybe that is why they cost 4 or 5 grand extra.

The 4Runner's V8 is not going to "pull" like the International diesel engine, but it won't disappoint you. Your neighbors will probably thank you as well.
