Best suspension/lift kit for around $1k? (Yes I've researched)

In fairness, this forum is so active that the results from "do a search" can be difficult to sort through, especially when using the built-in vBulletin search. I find google works better. Use the site: keyword (e.g. site:toyota-4runner.org) or the Google box at the top of the page.

I doubt you've been on many forums as active as this one. On most forums when somebody says "there are a 1000 threads on this already" usually means 20. On here it might mean 1000 literally.

I'm sorry, but I don't see any condescending posts earlier in this thread. One guy asked you to be more specific and several of of us posted with "drive it stock then figure out what you want" advice, which IS good advice in response to "This is my first off-road type vehicle and I want to get my feet wet immediately." If you didn't want that sort of advice you should have posted "I'm going to lift it and that's that" instead.

He's had plenty of good advice in this thread. It's up to him on which direction he wants to go. However this question has been answered about 1000 times. He's also started other threads asking very basic questions which could have easily answered by using the search function. The fact that he's actually had very helpful advice and info is surprising to me.

What a bummer that must be, living in a world where you expect to be ignored or mocked for asking questions.... You live in The South? Utah? Trump supporter? In the military, lol? I'm fascinated when I meet someone who would take the time to criticize someone else for asking questions, instead of taking that same amount of time to just answer them. I don't get that attitude. How many thousands of pages of content on this site? Including pages which discuss the inadequacies of the available search engines?

I have started two threads, total. The fact that this model has been out since 2010 and the majority of these threads are 50+ pages long, makes it a little diffcult and extremely time consuming to find ONE answer. You have to weed thru lots of BS that others have posted, typically derailing threads etc. I have been on numerous automotive forums and this one has the most crybabies about repeat questions, than i've ever encountered. Is it a repetitive question? Probably so, but it takes just as much time to type up a simple answer as it does to post things like "hey man, do more research" or "this has been answered 1000 times."

It doesn't benefit anyone to be negative and generally unhelpful.


Again, to those who have posted helpful info, i greatly thank you. I have narrowed down what i want to do when the timing is right, thanks to this thread alone. If i could, i would buy you all a beer.

I was shopping for suspensions and didn't know if I should go Bilstein, OME, or go the rebuildable route with Icon, Fox, Kings etc. And this is after being on this forum with a previous 2013 Limited 4R. And guess how many threads I started about which suspension I should buy? ZERO. I read through dozens of threads about suspensions. I read through the ENTIRE "Another Bilstein 5100" thread, the whole Dobinsons thread, numerous threads on Icon vs Radflo vs Fox. And you know what the conclusion was? There is no right answer, you have to buy what fits your needs and is within your budget.

The whole "weed though" BS is just another lame excuse. I weeded through the BS and came to my own conclusions. The "it's too time consuming" is another lame excuse. If you can't help yourself don't expect others to go out on a limb to do so.

Let me ask you this, you made this thread in search of ONE answer. Have you found that ONE answer yet? The answer is no because there is no ONE answer when it comes to suspensions. This thread is going to end like every other "which suspension should I buy" thread and it is that there is no right or one answer. I guess someone down the road will have to "weed" through this thread too.

What does politics or where I'm from have to do with anything? I thought there was a rule on this forum to keep that shit off here to prevent nitwits like you from starting flame wars on things that have no relation to the topic on hand.

Call it a difference in philosophy. I don't mind when people ask questions where it seems like they have put in some research and thought into the subject. The problem I have is when there is a STICKY at the top of this forum about types of lifts and an entire thread on LIFTED pics along with numerous other threads asking the same question yet some other member is too busy, too important and must make another thread on it. I'm amazed when people say the search function doesn't work. It works. There are two ways you can search, either use the search function or the "google search" function. I find the Google one a lot better. If between those two and you still can't find an answer then I'm not sure anyone can.

I am very happy with the following for my DD as it rides nice, doesn't dive and steers like stock. $400 for SPC arms with zerks and adjustability. 5100's on 2.5 in front and 1.5 Daystars in back for $400 plus alignment for $80. Clears the 275/70/17 KO's fine. Good luck on your build!

Could not have summed it up more perfectly. There is no "one" answer.. You are just getting the same information as every other post and then you need to decide for yourself..

I always find starting a search with: "5th gen 4runner xxx..." generates a lot of great results. I have had a TON of questions on this forum, and probably 95% have been answered through research, and the other 5% are easily answered by bumping relevant threads instead of creating new ones..

I did an Icon build on a Tacoma, and it was great, but there are times I think I may have gone a little overboard, but I did not start until I hit around 15K to see what I was really going to do with it. I'm in the process of a build on my 2016 TE. I've put a little over 10K on it. My first change was at about 60 miles when I changed to the BFG KO2 275x70x17 and aftermarket rims (the same I had on my Tacoma). I knew the stock wheels/tires would not get me where I wanted to go. I just ordered the Southern Style front bumper
2014+ 4Runner Slimline Hybrid front bumper ? Southern Style OffRoad and a CBI Offroad rear bumper with dual swing outs.

I had decided on a stage 1 Icon w/an upgrade to the 2.0 rear shock w/res (about $2800 installed), but I have always been interested in the Bilstein 6112/5160 combination. A quality combo and at a price point around $1200 not a bad option.

FYI! I started with BFG 275's on stock wheels. I didn't have rubbing issues until the beadlocks with a wider wheel and less backspacing. Decided on Dobinsons as I did not want race shocks on my daily driver (wife's) and the noise and added maintenance.

Here is a pic, I like the stance and my wife gets compliments all the time on the truck.

Thanks to all of those who contributed to the thread so far. I expected some condescending attitudes, so that's fine I suppose, but majority of you have actually answered my initial questions.

I went and looked at some tires today, actually. I may go that route first and just scoop a 275/70 instead of the 285 that I originally wanted. Little to no cutting and they'll still do the job.

All that talk about suspension, and the one thing you decide on is go one size smaller on tires? Did anyone in the thread even suggest 275s???

PS: KO2s are getting pretty pedestrian on 4Runners; do yourself a favor and pick up a set of load range C Cooper AT3s and call it good.

I have also narrowed down suspension. I just mentioned the tires because I'm looking at doing both in the same timeframe. Not sure why it's a big deal?
