Best suspension/lift kit for around $1k? (Yes I've researched)

I would not try to figure out too much on your own. Maybe call a reputable integrator like Toytec and tell them your goals and budget, pick their brain. Nice part about an outfit like that is they sell a lot of brands, and they work with local installers, so you still have lots of flexibility in your options.

I agree. Talk to a person 'in the know'. I am a long-time Jeep guy who tried to figure out my lift on my own. I took some good advise and contacted an expert. It worked out great.

I now have a 2013 TE and working on what I want to do first to my rig.

PS: KO2s are getting pretty pedestrian on 4Runners; do yourself a favor and pick up a set of load range C Cooper AT3s and call it good.

Not a big deal, just entertaining watching threads like this evolve, seeing what posts you are compelled to hit 'like', which suggestions you heed, guessing which posts you find condescending, seeing which posters you 'respond' to. Much of this forum consists of looking to reinforce your choices/wants/needs/beliefs, just like the rest of the internet.

However condescending and annoying you find some posts in your thread, it really has gotten a bit less like hanging out with the kids in after-school detention in the last few months. 6+ months ago you couldn't say much without getting a spit-wad to the back of the head from the back row of the class. Now seems easier for people like you to get some helpful input, as long as you are able to ignore the chaff.

Good luck with your mods, hope they are effective for whatever wheeling you may/may not end up doing.

No lean on my non-KDSS truck. There's at least 2,837 threads on lifted, leaning KDSS rigs that you can find using the search function.

Decided against the magical 4th gen.

This thread has indeed turned to gold. In all reality, I expected a little flaming, so its not a huge deal, just annoying. Thanks to everyone, rather it be the entertainment or the genuine attempt to help me. I have decided to either go Dobinsons or the Bilstein 6112/5160 combo. I discovered that we have a reputable Jeep shop nearby that also messes with the 4Runner, so I'm going to swing the truck by there today (hopefully) to get an idea on installation etc.

I am after something similar. I had/have pretty much decided on a Dobisons setup but I cannot get over yellow and teal color combo. Not something I know I should worry about for suspension, but if I am spending close to a grand on something, I want something that I really like. THough this is exactly what I am looking for suspension wise. I am still mentally mulling it over and making sure I will not hate it.


2x - Front Shocks GS59-700 - Twin Tube, fixed mount (not adjustable), suits 0-2" lift $250

Front springs (pair) C59-302 - 100-220LBS heavy load front weight, 2" lift. 586LB $175

Rear springs (pair) C59-325 - Stock rear end load, 1.75 to 2" lift. 420/420mm, 17mm wire, 220LB $175

I didn't talk much about tires in my other post. When I changed out from the stock 265's I had the shop (I've used Discount Tires for several years now) test fit a Duratrac 285x70x17, but I found they rubbed at the back/inner portion of the wheel well at full turn. We fit the BFG KO2s in a 275x70x17 and found they had plenty of room with the 4R in stock form. At the time I was unable to try the BFG's in the 285 as they did not have any in stock. I went with the 275s. I just had them rotated and balanced, and I talked with their guys about the larger tires. They have tried to fit the same size BFG and Duratrac, but found the Duratrac would have rubbing issues. I'm assuming its because the Duratrac is closer to the Mud Terrain style.

I had the Duratracs on my Tacoma - putting about 45K on them before I sold the truck - and I've had the Open Country AT II sold by Les Schwab, as well as, the original BFG AT. I found the Duratracs were better in snow, mud and sand, but I thought they had a little "flex" in them - although not as bad as a true mud terrain - and slightly higher road noise than a typical AT. There was a significant tread "bite" in the sidewall - rivaling some of the pure mud terrains. I rotated and balanced them every 3K - 5K, and they had plenty of life left in them when I sold the Tacoma. The original BFG and Open Country were very similar in ride quality, gas mileage, and offroad performance. The original BFG seemed to wear faster than the Open Country counterpart.

The new BFG KO2 seems to be going in the right direction. They have added some sidewall "bite" that was not there in the original version. The outer blocks are spaced farther apart, and, again, seem to have made their grip in the rough stuff better. The gas mileage was affected by about 2mpg going from stock to the KO2. Just a slightly "rougher" ride, but not anything I, nor any passengers, ever complained about.

Once I lift my 4runner, and I've installed the rear bumper with the tire carrier I'm going to look at the 285s again. Although I have only good things to say about the KO2, I still am drawn to the Duratracs as they performed better in those conditions I mentioned earlier. On my Tacoma I did the body mount chop to fit the ones I had on there. Although I did not have any problems with it I will not do it again to fit tires. I do not have anything bad to say to anyone who will decide to do it, but this is just my opinion/decision.

i think you just gotta pull the trigger and just do it!
i read up and down the forums between the bilstein setup and king setup. i lagged for a few months just reading and asking a shit ton of questions to people T4R/IG/Youtube/fab shops strictly selling either Bils or Kings.

But then i just said F it and purchased. because you'll never know until you get it. or find someone with a setup youre questioning. AND experience will never be the same for either person.

i decided personally on bils weighing out my personal pros/cons. conclusion was that i'll never use kings/icons to its full potential as of now. i'll just pick it up when i have more free time once the kids get older.

BUY IT! DO IT! you'll be happy... maybe? lol

oh i forgot to mention. i had a friend that asked me everyday for the past few months "did you buy it yet?" throughout the day. soo for that to stop i had to get something quick hahaha

Lol. I got some quotes on the Bils today, but holy shit that installation fee was higher than i expected! I've paid for coilover installs on performance cars before and it was half the cost. Regardless tho, i think its only a matter of time before i make the buy. Just waiting and shopping prices right now.
