Best way to Paint Badges? take off or leave on ?

I want to paint my silver badges black --- the "LIMITED" and "4runner" ones...

Do people usually take these off and paint them, or leave them on the truck?

I would think off but have see some threads here were people were just painting them on - and not masking the letters off - I assume that was plasti-dip though and it just peeled off?


If i take them off -- whats the best way of getting them back on?

I platidipped mine and its held up for over a year so far. With weekly trips through a car wash. I would go that route. If you really want to paint them with regular paint. I would remove them and go to a paint store and get new tape. I would put a piece of painters tape along the top or bottom to realign them when you put them back on.
If you use plasitdip just mask off around them to control the over spray (makes for easier clean up). I would go an inch or 2 around the emblem. Once its dry just peal off what ever you dont want black. Also with plastidip thicker is better. That way it peels of instead of tearing into small pieces.

when you peel it off (plasti-dip) do you need to use an X-Acto knife or similar to cut around the letters? If you dont, will it just peel everything off - including over spray in one shot?

Good video you found there. I think you already answered your own question. Anywhere there is a gap, the platidip will separate. So keep that in mind if you decide to paint anything else (like I painted my wheels with the tire on and just peeled it off the tire).

i used a toothpick to get the dip off around the letters. It comes right off like that.

yea - i did answer my own question after youtube... I think plasti dip is definitely the way to go vs. real paint and taking the badges off etc.

looks easy enough to do.


I did buy some real paint to paint my silver roof rack black. Wondering if i should just use plasti-dip for that also.
