Best way to transport a 22re motor?

O Monday I'm going to be picking up a 22re to replace my worn out one in my 87 4runner. He is wanting to upgrade to a small block Chevy so I'll get the motor straight from the vehicle. What is the best method of transporting this? I don't want to dent anything or screw up the oil pan, etc. Can it be laid on its side without damaging it? Would the back of a truck bed or a low trailer be better?

Laying on its side is fine. I would lay it on the exhaust side and I usually use an old tire or something to give it alittle bit of cushion.

you can lay it up right on top of a used tire. i put it up against one of the walls in the truck bed and strap it down. transported a few honda motors this way.

Another question

So I guess the next thing to know is, what all needs to be unbolted, unhooked, etc., to allow the engine to be pulled out and be free of the chassis? I'm probably gonna rent a hoist and it'd be sweet if i could get this swap done this next week.

transmission bell housing bolts, torque converter bolts (automatic only), exhaust, wiring harness unplugged, motor mounts, radiator hoses. I would pull the fan off so you dont break it and pull the radiator to give you more room.
