Better Idle with 93

Hey all,

Just wanted to share some findings that seem to be related to gas grade.

When I first bought my 4 Runner, I'd read that running 87/89 was fine, even though it could make use of (and would run best on) 91. So, I ran 87 for several months. The truck would have an issue where, at idle with the brake applied, RPMs would drop to 450 or so and a piece on the underbody (it looks like a shield between the driveshaft and exhaust) would rattle obnoxiously. It sounded like one of those old-fashioned alarm clocks with bells on top. This was at nearly every stoplight if I left it in drive (I would switch to neutral and the idle would go up and sound would go away.)

In January, I towed a trailer w/ motorcycle on it 3 or so hours and decided to run 93 for power and gas mileage. With 93, after having 87 for so long, I noticed a definite increase in throttle response and a small bump in gas mileage (from 18 highway up to ~20 highway). So, I decided to start running 93 more often since it seemed to have some benefits.

The other thing that I noticed, after running 93 for a while, was that the idle drop at stoplights was completely gone. The idle now stays steady at 600rpm.

Just an interesting find that I figured I'd share. Even though there aren't huge differences in driveability between lower and higher octane gas with these trucks, the higher octane stuff definitely performs better.

ive noted similar benefits after using 87 for a long time without any real issue and switching to high octane gas. After verifying that using the higher octane gas was actually making a difference in engine response, smoothness and very small increase in mpg using real time data recording and math, There is a difference between 87 and 91, I see absolutely no difference between using 91 and anything higher.

*91 is the recommended octane for these vehicles

The V6 and V8 factory spec for idle speed is 700 ±50 RPM when the transmission is in neutral. Measuring the idle when stationary and in drive is not a reliable way to gauge engine performance because the transmission performance can interfere.

Sorry. My title was probably a bit misleading. We don't have 91 around here. Only 87, 89 and 93. So I'm used to saying 93 when I refer to 'premium' gas.

I realize that. I suppose I'm not really idling. I'm just noticing more consistent RPMs when the truck is being held stationary by the brake at a stop.

I was getting the same thing and I was able to prove it with real time data logging. it definitely makes the truck idle smoother. In neutral or in drive. I did this experiment about 2 years ago when I was switching gas (as gas got cheaper again) ill see if i can find the screenshots.

I'd love to get a logging device of some sort, but I'm using an OBD-II 'snapshot' device for a discount on my insurance...so my port is occupied :/

its nothing dramatic at all but it is noticeable to someone in tune with how their vehicle runs. Basically, just use 91 or better if you can find it to get the best results. 89 will probably be unnoticeable in most conditions from 91
