This is difficult, i like them both.

The 5th gen got me very interested in 4runners, they became my favorite car. I saw the 2010 and thought it was one of the best SUVs ever made.

I finally was able to buy one years later, a 2015 model brand new. I did not know about the refresh or was not paying attention, forgot, whatever, and was surprised by it, but liked it even more, but could have been biased because I was excited about finally getting a 4runner.

But I really like them both. Would not complain if I had either one.

Some people say the post-refresh front end looks like a smallmouth bass.

The thing is the POST front is cool it just DOESN'T match the rest of the truck. The PRE matches the overall style of the truck way better. POST looks the they where going for a total inverse mullet job, party in the front, serious in the back.

Agree there are some nice post interior enhancements that I sure don't mind

I liked almost everything on my '10 TE better than my '20 ORP. Better front & rear bumpers, roof rack, wheels, black fender flares, mud flaps, instrument cluster and dash strip display, black mirrors & door handles, etc. But that's what I get for getting tempted back into the Jeep world for a short time. Since I couldn't buy a new '10-'13 Trail and even with nicer low mileage examples way overpriced, I went with the '20 ORP. I do like the in-dash navigation/Apple CarPlay, even though the execution is terribly dated and not at all intuitive. I like some of the new safety stuff and mainly like the fact it is new. But if I could retrofit the '10 bumpers back on while keeping the TSS stuff up front, I would consider it.

I prefer the post refresh. I remember a lot didn't like the post refresh when it first came out. Pre only lasted 4 yrs 10-13. Post refresh 14 to 22 maybe for the next refresh or 6th gen? There was a big rise in sales for the refresh. I think that's why Toyota is milking the current refresh.

I like the headlight design much better on the post refresh, but the subdued bumper design of the pre. Maybe it was my sub-conscience talking to me when I decided to get a full bumper. I was never a fan of the whatever-you-call-it fog light shroud thingy design. Personally I think it looks like the Predator's face. And I agree with the person who said it doesn't really fit with the rest of the body all that well. Toyota sure has had a knack for wildish front ends the last decade.

Pre-refresh Trail Edition is the best looking 4Runner ever, IMO.

First time I saw a post-refresh I thought it looked like a praying mantis wearing Darth Vader’s face mask. It has since grown on me, but I still think it looks like it’s trying too hard.

My 1st Gen was better looking than ANY of the later versions........but I like the Pre-refresh better than my 16.

Trail - tie. Interior on the post is way better... like light years better. I like both exteriors (black trim, roof rack on the pre and the overall cohesive look on the post).
Limited - pre

I like my 2016 TEP significantly more than my 2010 SR5 w/ leather, moonroof, etc.

I'm sorry, but I prefer the post-refresh styling inside and out.

I absolutely loved the proportions and overall design of the 3G T4R. However, I wasn't in a financial position to buy one when they were new. When the 4G (and the early 5G) came out, I wasn't impressed. Both looked to me like the vehicular-equivalent of a boiled potato... nothing offensive, yet nothing to get too excited about.

I feel the same. Headlamp on the post looks great imho but the post bumper just has too much fat on it compared to the pre. A little chopping fix that though for me lol

Another thing I liked was the stock height and position of the beefier front bumper and back bumper/hitch. They could take minor impacts from fender benders unharmed but wreak havoc on softer vehicles.

Being a Jeep guy my whole life with an FJ and Xterra thrown in there, I was never into any 4 Runner. When I first saw the front end of the newer 5th gens I didn't like it all. They have grown on me and I like them now. Very distinctive and different than any other SUV on the road. So I voted for post re-fresh. I love my TRD Pro and hope to keep it a long time although the China virus shutting my business down will determine how long I get to keep it.

I agree. I always admired those too. The first gen Sequoia also just looked like a big huge 3rd gen 4runner. I always loved the way my wife's 2002 looked.

I think most everyone would take the post refresh and continually ongoing tech upgrades all day long.....except maybe that damn entune system.

Curiously, excluding TSS and Entune, what other tech updates have there been? I think between my '10 TE and '20 ORP, the only other bit of tech that was added is the keyless entry.

I'm still in the camp of 'If I could've bought a brand new pre-refresh vs a post-refresh, I would have bought the pre.'

Even with the "updated" interior, I liked the old interior better. The '20 model uses way too many material surfaces in the dash area... textured vinyl, metal-flake paint, carbon-fiber and brushed aluminum... all in one dash/console assembly. And yet, they lacked the foresight to use the dull surfaces where the sun hits so it creates lots of glare.

All that, I still like the new one even as I miss the old one.
