BFG All-Terrain T/A KO2 went on sale today

I have just taken delivery of a 2015 Toyota 4Runner Trail Edition.

I ordered five BFG AllTerrain KO2 LT265/70R17s to replace the stock Bridgestone Dueler HTs.

However, when I arrived at the dealership to pick up the truck I was told that the spare wheel would not fit on the vehicle with the new tire. It was too big for the carrier.

Nobody could quite understand why this would be as the tire is nominally the same spec as the stock tire. It was suggested that the tread might be slightly thicker?

Has anybody else seen this?

Is there any adjustment to the carrier that maybe the fitter wasn't aware of?

Currently I still have the Bridgestone as a spare. If I were to get a flat what would the consequences be of running, temporarily, with 3 BFGs and one Bridgestone? Of course I might not have anywhere to stow the punctured tire if it didn't fit the carrier.

That's bs from the dealer. I have a 285/70/17 under mine with no problem. It's a 13 trail with kdss, these are all the same underneath

I am new to this thread...but remember, your spare tire SHOULD have the same DIAMETER as your other tires. Tread width is NOT important. Diameter of tire is very important. (Thus, donut spares are thin but diameter same as main tires.)

Why? Vehicle stability control (VSC) (and maybe even TRAC) are based on tire rotational speeds. So, if one of your tires is a spare and is smaller (diameter wise) than the others, then this means that the spare will be spinning FASTER than the others. VSC computer may interpret this as slippage and may brake that wheel...thus screwing up your driving. It all depends on how sensitive VSC is on your vehicle.

IMHO, to prevent issues, keep spare tire and main tires with the same diameter. Granted even with same size, certain AT or MT tires are still ever so slightly taller, which should be OK.

Yup. My 34x10.5 KO2 fits fine in the factory spare carrier with no adjustments. Even clears the track bar.

Thanks, that's reassuring. I'm not sure why the dealer couldn't fit the spare under the vehicle. I expressed surprise but I wasn't going to argue. I've got 4 tires and they certainly improve the truck. I might try Costco and see if they can fit it.

Thanks. The published dimensions on tirerack.com show overall diameter for the Bridgestones of 31.7" and 31.6' for the BFGs. I doubt this would throw off the VSC or TRAC.

Some dealers and stores do not like to fit out of spec tires due to legal issues. Try DISCOUNT TIRES.

The previous KO was also. Siping is one...but the chemical of the rubber is the other i believe.

For what it's wort, Canadian tire rated them with their highest rating for ice traction and as good performers in snow and wet conditions.

I think all the tires they announced a year or so ago are in production with no immediate plans for new sizes or load range.

Thanks, that's what I was afraid of, and as much as I like BFG's (have had 4 sets) I guess it's time to move on. Too bad as the KO2's are the best looking tire out there in my biased opinion.

Anyone else cut a Ko2 yet? It didn't go all the way through and its holding air but I don't really feel comfortable driving with it. No road hazard, so I dont quite know what to do.

Just the rubber. Where I was this weekend had a lot of shale rock. (Uwharrie).I trying to figure out a safe way to keep this as a spare. Maybe a tube? I wouldn't run a tube as an everyday solution but to be able to get it to a shop.

On my old Jeep Wrangler I had I ran tires like this all the time but it was only used for off road and local use. I do not think a tube is a good idea. If there really is no cords cut it may be fine but it would be hard to tell. If it was my 4runner I would just replace it.

I haven't cut one yet but a friend of mine has. Mine have been to Moab and the trails around Ouray but so far no cuts (knocks on wood).

I'd certainly move it to the rear if it's a front tire, just in case. Had the same thing on an old pair of original KOs, mine turned into a rather large bubble in the sidewall that prompted me to replace it on the quick. Replace it ASAP, the damage from a catastrophic flat is going to be much much more expensive than a new KO2.
