BFG AT KO Report - 2003 4runner

Yesterday I just replaced my tires and had to post a report on these tires:

BFG AT KO 265/70R/17 -

Installed: OCT 2009 Removed SEP 2013
Miles: 62,000
Paved Road/OffRoad: 90/10 (Occasional Very Tough Terrain)
Hauling 19 ft Boat, Snowmobile Trailer (5% of miles)
Rotations - 3
Flats: 0
MPG (Computed by 4runner 16.8 to 19)
General Driving Style: Hard

These tires and truck combination have performed flawlessly in a wide variety of difficult circumstances. Heavy snow, rocky trails, muddy roads and Wyoming, and Idaho,

I know tires are a personal preference to some extent. Given that I am picky and despise poor tire performance, wanted to share this good experience.

I almost was going to go another winter with them, sorry I don't have a picture of the remaining tread. Seems like they had a few thousand miles left if snow and mud wasn't coming around the corner!

Good deal! I got 65k out of my last set and still had 30-40% left and sold them for $500 lol. I run load range E tires so that's probably why I got more life out of them but I love these tires as well!

Just put these on my new TE and am looking forward to a long life on them.

Good to hear, I sold my first set with 35K miles and 75% tread left, so I expect to get at least 50-60K out of these.

Based on what macoyle said, maybe I should expect 75K since they're range E.

ive got a set on my 85, they have about 50k on them, and about 50% tread left.

not sure if i'll put a set on my 06 when the time comes. they might be a bit more aggressive than what im looking for...

As with many people, I am looking at tires now, soon I will need some. I have never been a BFG a/t fan, I think because EVERYONE has them. But that is not a good reason to not like. So i have added these to the list. My list now is: all 285/70/17

Toyo Open country AT 2 - Load E $1089
BFG AT - Load D - $1200ish
Duratrac - Load D - $1300ish

One plus with the BFG, is just like you have all stated above, everyone likes them, they are Classic, lots of people want to buy, so they can always be sold, thats a good thing.

Duratrac's look awesome, but honestly do I need that, prob not.

Always liked Toyo's, people like them, They look alot different than two above.

Seeing a lot of you long time 4runner owners and major modders, that keep going with BFG AT's even after trying something else. Really makes me want them. As well as Dura's. Who knows what I will decide.

Hkollie1 I am assuming that you went with another set of them? Thank you for posting that info!!

My experience is similar to hkollie1. I put mine on in 2007 and they are still on my 4runner. Mine are load range c. They have held up great to many miles off road in the Arizona and California desert. When they wear out they will be replaced with the same tire.

Yea I love them! I even switched to the 285-70-17 KM2s and after a week I went back to the BFG A/Ts lol. Unfortunately these tires are either love them or hate them from people. Most of that is because so many people have them, they are the most expensive A/T out there, and the design hasnt changed in quite some time.

I have had them in Kodiak, Alaska for 3 years and they were great on the ice, snow, slush, mountains, trails, etc. These were one of the preferred tires for folks that didnt have two different sets of tires (Summer/Winter). The other all terrain tires that were most used were the yokohama geolander (I think it was the ATII, I dont remember exactly which model it was). But like I said thats what most people ran, if they were running any type of M/T they werent that great. I also had a jeep on 37" Irok's and those did well for what they were but that was just a toy so it wasnt a DD. I was also stationed in Connecticut and had great results as well but there wasnt as much of a preference since most people up there were hippies and drove prius's or some luxury car.

I have also ran them in Texas for years with great results with high heat, summer towing and never had any issues. My entire family runs these tires or Toyo M/Ts. Yes I have tried the Terra Grapplers and they are good tires, but they dont have that great of performance in the rain or mud/clay. Its not a giant difference but it seems the truck has to work a little harder to get through the same trails at the ranch than these BFGs. Also the Nittos are cheaper but we didnt get as many miles out of them, average was 40-50K instead of 70K+.

Trucks in our family:
my 4Runner in sig (65K out of last set with 30-40% remaining, they did have some dry rot though) mild towing

06 F250 running 35s BFGs averages (50-60k out of a set with tons of towing)

04 F250 running 35's Toyo Mts- (35-40k out of BFG A/T 8K miles on Toyos with about 60% remaining) he runs this truck like a raped ape though

98 Cherokee XJ- 31" BFG-(23K on current set with 70% remaining)

(Mother in law) 05 H2- running 35" BFG A/T (got 83K out of her last set but drives like a grandma)

06 Chevy 2500 - running 33" Nitto Terra grapplers (averages 40-50k) mild towing
