BFG KO2 265C load index warning

Hi all - long time lurker, first time poster.

I've combed the hell out of these forums and read everything about the merits of the various BFG KO tires - sizes, sidewall stiffness, pros, cons, etc.

I recently bought a 2016 SR5 Premium and am currently running on stock Dunlops and stock suspension (ugh). Shrockworks sliders are on the way, along with an ARB awning and an internal drawer system for an overland trip out West in ~2 months.

Here's where I'm running into a problem I'm hoping for advice on - Toyota calls for a load index of 113 and the BFG KO 265/70R17 C is 112. Due to this, none of the major shops will install the 265 C's citing legal clauses they're bound to. I see from reading about every damn thread in existence that a number of y'all are running them so I assume it's safe, but how did you find someone to install them?

This is so difficult for me. I'm all about unsprung weight (have light forged wheels and light racing tires on my M3).

My 2008 T4R I didn't know better - I got the 265/70 E Duratracs because I thought I was going to be towing (I didn't). The ride wasn't bad, and I didn't mind the MPG hit bc all my cars get <15mpg

But with this one I am trying to be smarter.

265/70 C weigh 45.7lb
275/70 E weigh 55.2lb
285/70 E weigh 58.1lb

If I'm moving up to E, I'm not even thinking about the 275, so the choice is between 45.7lb or a +12.4lb increase to the 58.1lb, per corner.

And 49.6lb weight increase overall with the 285s.

When I was calculating for my BMW, the tire weights only varied by a few pounds give or take......the delta gap seems huge in this regard.

I had mine installed at an NTB in the DFW area. I just told them what I wanted and they installed them. They never questioned the load rating.

You actually might think about stepping up the load range on your tires anyway. It sounds like you are thinking about adding a considerable amount of weight.

Thanks for the reply - NTB is actually one I called and the guy said he wouldn't put them on.

I've considered doing the E load (especially since they're cheaper + I'm now considering also adding a cargo box into the mix) but from what I've read, those strain factory suspension and may also ride a bit harsher due to the higher ply.

Any thoughts? Am I backing myself into an entire suspension + tire overhaul here when I should instead just consider sticking with the factory setup since most driving will be highway + the occasional forest road?

Regarding the load rating, I went back and forth between the C and E rated 265's a month ago when I purchased mine. If you check the C rated 265's load capacity exceeds the rear Axle weight rating.for the 5th gen 4runner. Regardless of the tire weight rating this is the number the truck is rated for. I ended up going with the C load rating, I wanted to minimize the tire weight increase.

^ that looks awesome. I just went with the 265's. I essentially got them for $594 shipped with no taxes, so I couldn't pass them up. Plus I will be on stock suspension for the foreseeable future.

One of the 'heaviest' 4Runner's (curb weight that is) to come out of the Factory is the Limited model... and the 245 60R-20 tires they come with are Load Index rated at 107. And while there's considerable consternation here about that size tire (on the 4Runner) in terms of appearance and overall usefulness, there's no question they're fully functional in terms of carrying an otherwise loaded 4Runner down the road. Lots of forum members here tow large trailers with their Limited's, venture off road with them in stock trim, etc..

You may have to find a smaller independent shop that actually knows what they're talking about. Good luck.

you can exceed the load rating of the stock tires by properly inflating the KO2's

just go to a different shop, plenty of places will install them no problem. discount tire usually has competitive prices and will install them no problem.
 
I got so tired of shops telling me what would NOT fit ETC. that I just pull the wheels and take them in and get tires mounted, then bring them home and bolt them on.........:uzi:
 
thought id go for the 275 ko2's,( only come in E rating ) wanted that 1cm extra width and the slight extra in height , had them installed this week
each tire is approx 9lbs heavier than the 265's
and definitely feel heavier and slower than the stock Duellers

nice and quiet on the hyw thoug and look way more aggressive than stock tires
now considering a 1.25" spidertrax :spider::spider::spider::spider:

I've been extremely pleased with my KO2s in every kind of terrain and in all sorts of weather on asphalt (rain, snow, etc.) and I plan to buy them again.

OEM size - 265/70/17 Load Range C - Rides like stock and gets stock mpg.
 
I'm getting the 265 C's this week...got a decent deal for 4 tires installed + a 1 year Alignment package...all that other puncture stuff, rotation etc... NTB here in the East DFW area.

I'm stoked...from our phone calls he didn't suggest any issues with C.
 
Just make sure you run the proper air pressure in them. They need to be at 44psi to have the same load rating as the OEM P-metric tires do at 32psi. However, I'm never loaded to that capacity so I run mine at 40psi.

I can't imagine how horrible a set of Es must ride. The Cs at 40psi are plenty firm as is.

Put them on February 1st along with the front Bilsteins set at the top notch and Daystar 1.5" spacers in the rear. First time lifting/installing bigger tires so I don't have much to compare to; was completely stock before. Love the looks and the loss of nose dive. Heading to Hidden Falls Adventure Park tomorrow morning to take the easy to moderate trails - no armor and it's just me and my wife going so the plan is to take it super easy. I'm running 40psi on the road and plan to air down to 20psi for the trail.
 
Are the 265 K02s any bigger in diameter than stock dunlop at20s?

Thought I read they run a little small, but wasn't sure. Trying to figure out if stock size K02s will give just a little extra diameter or if I need to try to move up. Wish they had 275s in a C range... and imagine they will at some point, just maybe not for months or more.

I had 265 E K02s on my 3rd gen, and being only 100 lbs more than stock, it was way overkill. Great tires, but super stiff ride on a car tha tonly weighed about 4,000 lbs.
