BFG AT KO's vs. Nitto's

I have yet to see a Nitto owner go back to a set of BFGs so far but plenty of BFGs owners have nothing but good things to say about the Nittos after the switch.

Nittos aren't the greatest thing since sliced bread but for the $$$ they are hard to beat when compared to a pricier BFG.

Yeah, plus they should compliment my 2/1 lift that I recently installed. I just need a good aggressive looking tire that is less harsh on dry pavement than BFG's but can still handle off-roading and snow if need be. And Nitto's are better for wet pavement and resist hydroplaning more than BFG's also.

Josh , the 265/70/17 Nitto TG's will more than compliment the lift and look . It will be awesome !! It will really make it.

As far as Nitto's go I've never had them , but really would like to try them. They are building a great reputation. I've had many set's of BFG an do really like them , but there was a couple draw backs on the last few sets I'v has . 1> they were hard to balance 265 and my 285's . 2> I had a set on my 99 Exploder that after 30k miles I had good tread left but rode so hard for some reason and I tried everything. Maybe the truck was just to light foe those type of tires . All my others have been on full size trucks. Needless to say I still think they are great tires.

I think you made a good choice with the tires , can't wait to see the pics.

I was looking at the Nitto Terra Grappler's in a 285/70r/17 and the owner of 2 different tire places said "i would never get a good ride out of them b/c T4R is to light, and they are made for a heavy truck". I dont know if that true or not. I went with 285/70r/17 BFG KO's they cost more but i got 60k miles out of the last set, and they still have tread left.

Hmmm, count me as one of your former Nitto owner who won't be going back to Nittos TG. I thought that i mentioned this to you on multiple times in the past...you forgot? :D

Personally, i think that Nittos are a good buy, but there are other tires in it's price range that are just as good (e.g. Yokohama Geolander AT-S).

Nittos may be better than BFG AT KO on-road (even though there is no official data), i wonder why Josh thinks that it will be better in snow?? I dislike the Nittos due to it's road noise and thin sidewall width. I really dislike the howling/humming noise that the Nittos made at highway speed. None of the other AT's i had made such an annoyance (e.g. Michelin LTX M/S, REVOs, Michelin LTX A/T, Bridgestone Dueler H/L, and BFG AT KO).

I finally figured out...the Nittos sidewall is very similar to the Michelin LTX A/T-2...so, it is not any thinner than your average highway tire, but it does not compare to the BFG. I checked out the Michelin earlier this week. The sidewall is flexible and relatively thin. I had BFG AT KO right next to it and were able to measure the thickness of sidewall with my fingers...it was no comparison. The Michelin sidewall reminded me very much of the Nittos i had before.

And i have NEVER seen BFG AT KO sidewall look like this picture of pure carnage:

This is what happens when you take Nittos rockcrawling.

Those torn up Nittos (1 old pic too) aren't the same as I have on my truck. Even Discount lists them separatly from the regular A/Ts. Those are low profile tires which BFGs doesn't even make the KO in that size. We can find pics of any tire torn up if we look hard enough.

Maybe partly due to Nittos being new but you rarely read about any common problems with the Nittos but we can find issues with balancing, wear and so-so wet weather manners with BFGs with just a simple search.

Road humming I guess is present but even with the radio at low volume I just don't notice and none of my picky passengers have even commented.

I've driven on several sets of BFGs and I can't find the $200 worth of advantage in a BFG vs my Nittos and if and when I find fault with the Nittos I'd be the first to say so and post it here but after 3 years and 36k miles and plenty of off roading my Nittos are holding up quite nicely but I do have a bit of wear on the edges but that's also due to my penchant for hard cornering.

I do agree off road the BFGs have the edge but on a DD the Nittos give you more for your money and are still pretty close to a BFG off road and I've been off roading a fair amount over the last 18 years.

Thai, you and I are simply the best at the BFG vs Nittos arguments.

BFG does make BFG AT KO in low-profile sizes.

The $200 advantage is in it's off-roading capability and construction. And the fact that it has relatively aggressive tread PLUS bullet-proof construction for off-roading PLUS low noise is a bonus IMHO. That is worth $200 IMO...because for me, AT tires need to do just that, be a true all-terrain because you may find yourself in the middle of nowhere one day and a flat tire is the last thing that you want to deal with. That is worth $200 IMO.

As for on-road behavior, i am a grandma on the road in my G because my G is not particularly sporty nor nimble by any shot of the imagination! I have not had any issue with the BFG in rain. I, like most people, drive slower in rain and do NOT look for the biggest puddle to make a big splash. My ESP (= VSC) is always there to bail me out, but it really has never had to when i had BFG.

If i were to ever go back to AT, then i would probably stick with BFG AT Ko or Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor. I did consider Michelin LTX A/T-2, but the sidewall was a disappointment. :( And for me, a good strong sidewall is worth it's weight in gold or $200 for the off-roading that I do.

What load rating should I have them order? What are the differences between the different ones such as D and E?

Nittos don't come in Cload rating but D is plenty on a 4Runner even if you are towing. E is for bigger trucks that tow a fair amount more than the 4Runner's max of 5000lbs.

The max for mine is 7,000 lbs.
