BFG KM3 -or- Cooper Discoverer STT Pro?

It's about time to replace my 275 KO2s (which I've liked for the most part, with the exception that everybody and their dog has them), and am looking at switching to a 285 MT (TRD Pro w/ 2" Toytec Lift). I'm on the fence between the new BFG KM3s (which look awesome and have great INITIAL IMPRESSION reviews), and the Cooper Discoverer STT Pros.

Interested in member opinions. Anybody have experience with both? Pros/Cons? These will be 90% used on the highway (daily driver) / 10% off road.

KM3 for me

Hi, I am running 285 KM3 tires and I am loving them so far. about 1k miles on them. still playing with pressure but they ride nice and perform great. I have a TRDP as well and installed BP-51 lift with SPC UCAs. No regrets here.

I'm running the STT Pros. I like them really well. With that being said I don't think they are going last any longer than any of the other similar tires out there. I will probably try the new Coopers next. I've had great luck with Coopers over the years.

I've had horrible luck with BFG's and I don't get the cult like following for them. My brother in law put the KM3s on his Tacoma and said "never again".

Well, that's a new one on me.

I run Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac on the 4R, they are also very popular and I won’t hesitate buying them again. On the F250 I needed better tires for plowing and asked the service manager which is the one all the plow trucks are using. The answer was ‘KO2 but we are out of stock however XX is also good’. My reply was ‘I’ll wait to you have them in stock again’.

I have KM3s, several others I wheel with have STT Pros. They both perform pretty equally on and off road, with the exception I've noticed being that the Coopers are a little louder on the road. If you're between these two tires, get the one you like the look of better or you can find a better deal on.

I've actually looked at these before, but your post peaked my interest again...because they are just SEXY. AS. HELL. The more I research, the majority of the reviews seem to be very promising, and the price point is fantastic! Can you comment on long-term history/satisfaction, as it relates to wear (specifically, road?). I am all but ready to pull the trigger on a set of these bad boys.

Not sure what's confusing about my comment. I doubt I'm the only person on the planet to shy away (or switch gears) from a product that every Tom, Dick and Harry owns. I literally see 15 sets of KO2s every day - they're boring AF to me now. This is the same reason I don't own a wrangler, or a submariner. Also, as stated, I'm looking to get into an MT, and the BFG KM3s just aren't proven yet (and the KM2s proved to be complete shiza). Pumped that you like your tires so much though!

I can not give you a long term on them, i sold my 3rd gen. before i had 10,000 miles on them, and my 17 SR5 only has 10k on it, but i like the performance of them.

I have experience with both. Cooper were loud from the start and got louder. They started to cup a little as they wore. I put 15k on them. To be honest I was disappointed with them ran into 3 side wall issues. And the noise got bad. And I rotated ever 3-4 k miles


The km3s I have about 2k mile on them. They were pretty quite initially but have gotten a little louder. Not as bad as the Coopers. I have rock rashed them several time and the side walls have been phenomenal. The rubber compound seems softer then the Coopers so they will probably wear faster.

Overall I would buy the KM3'S over the coopers any day of the week. Ask [MENTION=109477]Rorck[/MENTION] how he feels about coopers.

Whatever mud tire you get, rotate them as often as possible, best every 3000k. If you have a lift, get rid of the stock UCA's.

I had the old A/T's on a 1992 Toyota pickup. Got 90k out of them. Then got the M/T's. Plenty of rubber at 55k but got loud as my alignment wasn't perfect so couldn't stand them anymore. I wouldn't expect that much mileage out of a 4Runner as it is much heavier than my old truck.

Also remember, most mud tires are E-load which will make them very heavy. The 285/70R17 KO2's in C load are 51 lbs which is about 8 lbs lighter than the E load KO2 and the KM3's are 67 lbs (only come in E load right now I believe). 10 or 15 more lbs doesn't sound like much, but do some research on unsprung weight.

Aside from balancing issues on random tires, what are the other BFG problems? I had the 34x12.5R18 KO2 on my 12' Tacoma and 285/70R17 KM2 on my current 4R and never had an issue

Anyways I have KM3s on my 4runner. I drove 100 miles to pick up the 4runner at the dealership and drove it 100 miles back. These tires are great no vibration and very little road noise. I remember when I had thornbirds on my YJ. Those tires were ****ing horrible. Compared to those these are a dream. I can't speak on their tread life yet, but as of right now I'm very pleased with them.
