BFG KM3 -or- Cooper Discoverer STT Pro?

STT Pro hands down I have run BFGs in the past on my Jeeps, STT PRO tires have about 40k miles on them and they still have 70% thread on them.

I stop running BFG due to the weaker sidewalls.

I had a set of BFG KO's back in the 90s on a 92 Toyota pickup. Got 90k out of them, granted the pickup was a lot lighter than a 4Runner. Only noticed wet traction problems with they got really old. Never had a blowout, I think a nail in one tire once causing a slow leak.

Switch to the MT's. Hated them, too loud. Got rid of them at 50k.

Reviews of the new K02s are all over the place so hard to decide. Thought about AT3 XLT and ST Maxx. AT3 XLT don't come in C load but are only 4 lbs heavier than the C load KO2s so that is a maybe. ST Maxx, I'm paranoid about all the posts about the tires causing the 4Runner to pull to the right. Not sure if the STT Pro does this or not.

I'm not buying them just for looks. I want a capable off-road tire that will also perform well with heavy road driving - they do exist, especially with some of the new technologies/compounds emerging. I drive a lot on the highway, but also go camping quite a bit and work in an industrial part of Houston with nasty dirt/gravel roads and plenty of washouts. I understand they will wear out quicker than ATs and won't perform as well as touring tires - my investment...my prerogative.



BTW, I'm wearing a dive watch right now, and I'm not planning on diving today! Style over function? :O



All these primadonna wheeling 'experts' who chime in with insulting remarks - I wish I had as much meaningless time on my hands. Thanks to those who've commented with pics or something productive to say. I've decided to go with the Falken MTs and will post pics soon. I'll make sure to run them through some mud first to appease the senior members.

Anyways...Falken is often overlooked and I’m sure it’s because their first crack at an AT tire was pretty disastrous. Since then, they’ve offered high quality at a super competitive price. Falken is well known in the Z rated performance car industry so it was only a matter of time before they nailed the off-road industry.

The Wildpeak AT3W is one of the best off road tires I’ve owned to date. I miss them everyday and would take them over my KO2s any day of the week. So...good choice. Looking forward to the pics.

Pretty judgmental, some people live for the 10% enjoy their MT's a lot and prefer to drive them daily.

Wondering how they compare to the K02's. I would imagine not quite as well. just due to trade pattern.

Alas - I picked these up for $840 installed (price-match + BF deal at DT) and have had them for about 2 weeks now.

Not only do I love the LOOK (dare I say), they ride great. Very good road manners for an MT. Excellent traction in the rain and no real measurable difference in MPG. They're slightly louder than my previous KO2's, but much quieter than previous MTs I've ran on other trucks. No rubbing at all w/ the upsize to 285 - no need for trimming.

TX Hill Country is in my near future, and we'll see how they do aired down in the sticks.

I've actually looked at these before, but your post peaked my interest again...because they are just SEXY. AS. HELL. The more I research, the majority of the reviews seem to be very promising, and the price point is fantastic! Can you comment on long-term history/satisfaction, as it relates to wear (specifically, road?). I am all but ready to pull the trigger on a set of these bad boys.

So just a random follow-up for those that like the Falken Wildpeaks, running stock suspension with 265/70/17s I absolutely love them. I heard numerous feedback regarding tire hum on highways from almost all the other AT tires out there, but these things are just QUIET..it's amazing in my opinion how quiet, I would say just a WHISPER louder than the Defenders I had on which are just a standard highway tire. I have almost 10k on mine now, and granted I will probably get them force-balanced soon since the first balance was NOT a force balance and is pretty close (having one wheel taken 4oz of weight) to balanced, but I do still notice a very slight shake in the steering wheel when making left turns at highway speed...otherwise zero complaints, the price was phenomenal from Simpletire.com and they've already taken some serious snow/ice like they were cruising on dry land!

COOPER! Had 265 KO2's removed a few days ago & swapped with these 285 STT Pro's & wish I had done it sooner. Couldn't stand the 265's w/ the lift & had to pull the trigger on these. Sure they hum a little, but they're just reminding you that they're there. I took them off road a few hours after the install & they handle great! Can't speak of the rain performance as I live in southern CA & it never rains so yea.... BMC up next because they do slightly rub with some flex & lock yadda yadda yadda... whatever

I find it really odd people are having issues when driving in the rain with the ko2 based on my personal experience. I have 25k on my 265 c rated and drove through a torrential downpour a few weeks ago and they handled great on the highway going between 30-50 mph. I've driven through rain many other times too and haven't noticed any issues. I'm not saying you guys aren't having problems, but in my opinion, that means it comes down to the one behind the wheel.

Im the same have 265/70/17/C K02s, so far with about 25K miles on them they are great in the rain, very little noise. I rotate every 4k KM.

Dont use them in winter time, have a dedicated set of snows. So far the BFGs are living up to their hype.

Only negative I see on running MTs on the streets (if you take block squirm, noise, aquaplanning and poor tread wear out of the equation) is the weight of them. 67lbs for E rated is no small number unsprung. I get why its needed and its a E rated, but for a daily driver maybe get ATs instead?

With a floor jack and a impact gun you can swap rims in 30 mins, more than enough to that small percentage of actual mud use you will see. This will also help the set last longer!

Just installed the new Yokohama MT on a Jeep and have been pretty impressed, after seeing how quick the STT Pro’s wore I’d be tempted to try something else (if an MT is what’s called for).

ST Maxx have fantastic tread life, however.

I just put on a set of KM3's. Pretty happy with them. First few weeks lots of rain driving and they handled well for me. Off-roading has been a few quick trips. They hum a bit but are a lot quieter than I had expected. I have a second set of rims that I will run a less aggressive tire on to extend the life of them.

Traded my Takoma in with 40000 miles on the KO2's.

Rotated only, every 5000 miles..never needed balancing. Came from the dealer with the KO2's.

There was a lot of tread left when I traded them in. And I always got in the fast lane when it started raining...passing all the senior citizens with their 4 ways on in the right lane. Never had a problem in the rain...and it rains a lot here in Florida.

Just ordered my KO2's today, only cause they couldn't get the KM2's. KM3's are still available, but they are a heavier tire.

Maybe next time I will get the MTs, these tires will expire before I wear them out. eace:

For years I’ve run BFG All Terrain T/A tires. Ran a lot of rough trails in the Eastern Sierra Nevada, Death Valley region, Nevada. Zero flats or failures, numerous slow leaks self fixed or held to next tire shop. These tires were during pre-K/O series days.

In 2016, due to personal circumstances, I shod my 2002 Tacoma TRD Off Road with Cooper Discoverer A/T3 in 10-ply LT rated tires. I am at an age where I am not seriously off roading any longer, but due to miles of dirt roads where I live still wanted a good set of tires. And they were around $500 cheaper than the BFGs. They didn’t have the grip in snow as the BFGs, otherwise they never gave me any wear, ride or durability issues. They handled the rough trails locally when I go upland game hunting fine in dry conditions.

In the past couple weeks I gave my son the Tacoma and bought a lightly used 2018 4Runner SR5. It is still on its original tires. I will likely go with the Coopers for their value for the dollar for my needs.

I had the KO2s in 275/70R17 and now have the KM3s in 295/70R17 and love them, they don’t feel as harsh as the KO2s. My buddy has the STT PROs and I feel my KM3s are way quieter than his.
