Biggest wheel and tire for a 3in lift

What is the biggest wheel and tire that I can put on my 1998 Runner if I have a toy tech 3in left?

If you have any pictures that would be great

you can fit a 33 on a stock rig, so if you add a 3" lift to it you can fit a 36" tire with some slight rub... :nicethread:

You may be able to FIT a 33" on a stock rig, but it will rub like CRAZY. Mine rubbed really bad with a 1" lift on my 99, even after folding over the pinch weld. Even with a 3" suspension lift my 33's would rub at full articulation. I added a 1" body lift and now all is well with the world.

You can fit a 33" with a 3" lift, but be prepared to do some slight mod to the front fender area (pinch weld areas) Look through my build thread and you can see some pics of 33" with a 3" lift.

it was a joke, not a di*k, dont take it so hard...

and i ran two sets of 285s on my rig for a long time with no lift, so dont tell me a 33 will only just fit.... know what your talking about

Agreed, 33's fit pretty easily with 3" lift. I ran 285's with the OME 882's up front without any real issues. I then switched to 315's. The pinch weld is the issue and the front corner of the bumper valance. It rubs frame at full lock but there isn't anything you can do about that.

I ran 33's on my '99 with stock 16" wheels and didn't rub one bit. If anything would make it rub it would be going with an aftermarket wheel with a different backspacing.

Not taking anything hard. :fishing:

Just wanting the OP to understand that not everything is as cut and dry as you say. :flipoff::uzi::jump:

I currently just went through this, so I DO know what I am talking about.

with a 1" lift I still rubbed in the front bad enough that I couldn't even turn without rubbing....sitting in the parking lot. Never mind flexing.

Not being a ****, just posting up facts.

As I posted, read my build thread. Let me help you. Go HERE to see what I had to do with 33" tires
My 285 Duratrac's rubbed badly. I had to do the pinchweld mod AND trim the front fender just to drive it daily, and even then it rubbed going over speedbumps while turning.

As I think about this I can see why different people have issues/non issues.
It will all depend on several factors
.

Are you using stock 16" wheels or aftermarkets with corrected backspacing?
Did you have to use a spacer to clear the UBJ?
Is your rig standard, SR5, or limited?
Is your pre-1999? Different front bumpers.

All of these factors will make a difference. on my rig (stock wheels) I rubbed the UBJ so I had to get spacers. With the spacers + Limited trim the tires were into the inner fender under normal driving conditions.

Even with a 3" lift, My tires were into the rear cladding. Don't believe me? Here is the pic.

This is with a Toytec Ultimate suspension installed. You could hear the tread popping on the mounting bolt for the flair.

So just don't assume that 33" tires fit without a lift.
I wouldn't have posted if I didn't have 1st hand knowledge.

Depending on several factors (wheels, spacers, flairs) they will rub.

Your's didn't rub. Good for you. Mine did. Badly.
(I guess mine is bigger than yours):fro:

To the OP. 33's fit fine on a 3" lift. IF you have limited flairs you may have issues at full flex with the pinch weld area and the rear flair bolts.
I LOVE mine, do it!!

I'm running adjustable bilsteins on third notch which is about 3" lift, I'm running treadwright 285/70/17 which run big and are about 33.3" they do not rub at all on anything, the wheels are 17x9 4.75 bs.

Noob

I know this post is OLD but seems to fit my situation best plus I'm a noob and figuring this out and can't post a new thread yet.

Basically, I just bought a beautiful 1999 (had been looking for awhile.) Just posted it in the build section so won't rehash all that.

Essentially, very happy with the build except for some tire stuff I'd love input on:

The guy I bought it from had just put on 305/70/16's with a crazy offset wheel of like -20 in load range E's (SEE PICS).

I personally didn't like them....the look, the weight, or the clearance in the front. (SEE PIC). Maybe I'm being hard on the weight thing (my rig is supercharged) but I'm loving the power (coming from an LJ with 35's...4.0 is good but wow is my runner a rocket compared).

So, I have sold those to a friend and looking to go with a Nitto Ridge Grappler which I like for a lot of it's look, AT/MT balance, highway manners, overlandish characteristics etc. I found it in a C, but in a 285/70/r17 (new American Outlaw Bandit wheels too with -10 offset). I think this will get me a lighter setup between those wheels and tires that will still be plenty fine for the off-road I'm looking at doing with this (my Jeep 35's were C's and I took it on buggy trails and am of the mind that D's and E's are overkill even with most wheeling on a lot of lighter vehicles, and especially anything more overlanding in nature). This should also get me a narrower tire at similar height to the 305 but with hopefully more clearance in front (maybe enough for front chains but doubtful). And, overall should be tucked in a hair with the -10 offset wheels better than those -20 offset wheels.

The only bummer is whether they will look big enough with my 4" lift. I tried to get that tire in a 285/75r17 but Nitto isn't making it yet apparently (in a C) and no timeline on when or if they really ever will. Thoughts on any of this? Thx!

305's on a 16 still run 33" tall, they are just wider. So they will look fine. Just get them in E and keep the PSI 28-32psi they will be fine.

I've never thought my tires looked too small. In fact, I may be the only person in the world that thinks this, but from some angles I think they look too big. Like a puppy with paws way too large for it's body.

I think you'll be happy with the 285/70R17 tire, but I think your choice of wheel sucks :grouphug:

Have you looked at the wheels from FN Wheels or Stealth Custom Series? They're both here on the forum as JdMeF9SiR2 and SCSPerformance, respectively.

Actually thx for picking on the wheels. I'm not sure on them either. I've been rethinking that. The American Outlaw one's are light and the center hole is perfect (sticking to ensure I have hub and lug centric) but i know they are cheapish. I'll take a look at those. I can wait. I just looked and like the FN a lot but ouch...they're double the American Oulaw. And I know...get what you pay for. What's the main reason you dislike the American Outlaw's?

Also, what offset with that tire would you go with? I have a dream of being able to run my chains in the front on snow runs but man, that shock tower / spring cradle in the front is close no matter what I'm afraid. Will be better than the 305's but still maybe not enough for chains.

Well and I'm being a baby about this weight thing I admit, especially being SC'd. But, I love the POWER of the SC. Would be hard to go back to the Jeep. I miss it but even geared with 4.88's on 35 C's that 4.0 was a dog. So I'm a bit giddy about the SC. It turned the E 305's just fine but you know more wear and tear on the tranny and all and just the snap of the SC with a lighter setup.

I'm not the guy to ask about wheel specs, I just know what I think looks good =D.

The American Outlaws to me are just too loud and gaudy looking. I like a simple, clean design like what both FN and SCS offer. But yeah, they're spendy.

Vin at SCS sells "blemished" wheels for a steal here in the classifieds and they're almost always impossible to see the blemishes from what I have seen/heard.

Can anyone help a Newbie with some lift questions
I just picked up an 02 4x4
I want to lift it 3 inches
Which kit is the best out there for under $1K???

I've already bought a set of new wheels/Tires for it
265/75/16

PLEASE Help....

Any recommendations for solving rubbing issues with a 3" lift running 285s? I've read that either spacers or a wheel with a lower or negative offset may be the solution, but was interested in some personal feedback from someone who has done this already?

I was running a 285/75/17 with a spacer and switched to a 35x12.5 with no spacer and have way less rubbing. A spacer was not good for me. Same wheels.
Body mount chop for sure.
