Bilstein 60mm BTS System

and now, it's just a waiting game. =/
Had it been a threaded adjustable body, it would have been perfect but I'm still interested. =)
 
I really really wish they were adjustable on the vehicle. I already have a trail rig on 39's, so I'd like to keep my DD as stock as possible. For my use I'd like to have the option to bump the height up 2-3" and toss on the 2nd set of wheels with probably some new IROK ND's for the long weekend overland type trips. With airbags out back and adjustable coils in front it's a 30 minute swap over and I'm ready for a run down to Moab for a long weekend. (I live 3-4hrs away). Then swap back for normal daily driving or long road trips where I don't want a lift or mud tires.

Then I think to myself: "how hard could it be to just machine two threaded aluminum collars that sit on the lowest setting and make my own adjustable coilovers out of these?"

Or even better - find a way to make some air cups offroad proof Then you'd have 3-4" of adjustable front height and great performance:

THE only down side to that is that your spring rates will increase significantly when that extra 3 inches is added. you would need to have the air cup on TOP of the strut mount in order not to change spring rates and ride quality.

I don't think it works that way. My understanding is that the cup just sits over top of the shock shaft and floats. If that's the case it should retain the original spring rate in either position - usually the cups are either up or down, no in-between. So it should act just like adjusting a coilover or setting the collar on these at one of the other heights. I would think you'd have a noticeable difference at full droop, but at ride height it should be pretty similar right? the spring will have the same compression either way.

I don't think they would be likely to hold up well to offroad conditions such as water and dirt. I suppose a boot of some sort could be fitted? Not sure. I've never owned a set.

The nice thing about these struts is the collar grooves are just machined into the body, so you could use a lathe and cut a new slot lower down and add enough extra room for the air cup thickness to keep the low position all the way down at stock height - or even lower if you wanted.

It would be nice if Toytec made some adjustable collars for the 60mm bodies!

They currently do not!

Unless it would just not clear the space due to the increased thickness of the shock, I don't see why toytec wouldn't eventually make an adjustable kit like they did for the 5100's. Though the included spring may play a part in that as it wouldn't sit flat on the ends, unless the vendors could acquire the shocks without the springs.

From the photos of the 6112 spring perch area, it appears that the spring perch is flat where the lower part of the spring rides.

that would be nice, because we know that's not normally the case, but you're right it does "appear" to be flat. Though judging by the video you posted of that 5th gen, clearance looks tight in there, and tight inside the spring as well. I still think this product has it's place. Should be a nice step between the 5100 lift and an icon.
 
I agree. It's a great option. I was really happy with the 5100's on my 3rd gen. Bilstein has been delivering a great product for a reasonable price with them. It appears to share a lot of tech with the 9100's which are pretty well liked in the rock crawling field. And they are 60mm threaded bodies.

I'd be curious what the cost would be to thread the shaft and whether you can buy the other parts you'd need to complete the lower end that way. Manufacturing the threaded collar is a lot harder than threading the shaft for a DIY project. If it's not too bad for the manufacturing, maybe Bilstein could consider an option to have threads. I think I'd probably pay $50-100 each more for that option if it were available.

Given that you use OEM parts for this, my guess is the goal was best product for lowest price possible. Likely why they decided to not thread the body in an effort to keep the total suspension cost including rear 5160's under $1400

they are height adjustable like the 5100's, just not threaded to be able to adjust while mounted.

Maybe once the 6112's are out for a while someone (without infringing on any patent) will come out with something if space permits between the shock and the coil!
I wonder if anyone from Toytec reads this thread?
