Bilstein Lift

Man, after many attempts of trying to get this lift on my rig, I did a little more research (which i should have done BEFORE buying it and trying to install it :redbrick:). I found out that since I am running complete stock suspension, I needed to get the Bilstein 4600 series. Instead, I bought the 5100 series. What i need to know is, if i get a 1" body lift, will i be able to fit the 5100 series on? If not, looks like I'll have to sell 5100's and purchase the 4600 series. Also, if I do have to get the 4600's can I still run OME 883 coils with it?

Well, I've tried 4 times. 3 times in my auto class, and once with my old man yesterday. We tried everything to get the damn thing in. Unbolted the swaybar end links and even used a pry bar to pull the LCA down and it still would not fit in. Unless I'm doing this wrong, it will not go in.
 
I also looked up on the bilstein website what i can run with my car. 1999 4Runner, 3.4L, Limited, and it came up with the 4600 series. If i could run the 5100's don't you think it would also give me that option?
 
5100's fit all 3rd gens. 883's are roughly a 3" lift coil if you have a stock bumper, so anything above the bottom perch & I'd be surprised if you said you mounted it successfully. Did you try using the stock bottle jack upside down on the upper control arm too?

No, but I have heard about using that method. Maybe I'll try that and see if it will fit in. But i don't want this thing to be at max extension and and hit a bump and blow my bj bearings...

Extend your shocks by using a 3" top plate spacer and you will effectively be using your LBJ as the bumpstop, a longer spring just uses more of your down travel at ride height.
 
I think you're getting yourself a little confused. 4600 is a stock replacement shock. You can run the 5100's but I'd put them on the lowest perch. A body lift won't help your problem one bit. And there is no such thing as a BJ bearing.

Try putting the compressor back on the spring, wind it down a bit, install and then take the spring compressor off.

I bought the lift used. So they way they came, are the way they came. Is there any other way I can "wind it down"?

Looks like you have the Tacoma version. Is yours on the bottom notch? Hard to tell. This should help. You want yours on the "stock height" groove.

Spring compressors are your only option. Your auto shop at school should have a set, but you could always take them to a independent shop and have them do it for you. I wouldn't pay more than $30-40 tops for this service though personally. I'll be renting a set at my local autoparts store in the next couple weeks, as I have 99 talls with Tacoma 5100's sitting in my garage waiting to be put to use.
 
My brother just went down to harbor freight and bought spring compressor for $15. You're gonna have to disassemble the coilover and remove the shock. You can then just pop the steel circlet ring out of it's current perch with your fingers and slide it down to the lowest perch, then, reassemble coilover. As far as getting the thing back on, it's not fun. Wish I'd thought about the bottle jack on the UCA. We just did it the hard way. Felt like I'd played a pro football game the next day. The 5100's are about 1/2" longer than the stock shocks, which is about exactly how much it lifted the front of the truck on their lowest setting with stock coils. Toytec said that would calm down after awhile.

So I assume you're bolting the top in first, then pressing the UCA'S down tryin to get the lower bolt through? If so, make sure the spring isn't getting caught up on the UCA this limiting how far the UCA will droop.

They'll fit, I have Tundra TRD springs on the second perch of Tundra 5100's, they were a b*tch but they went in.

Thats ecactly what im doing, but the UCA wont drop down far enough in order to get the lift in!
