Bilstein TRD Pro suspension kit on sale PTR13-35140

So this is my first set of AT's I have put on the 4R, I scored this set from a Dallas member w/a Trd Pro that went 285s. Before the suspension upgrade I rolled in Michellin Defender LTX all seasons, it rode really smooth, no road noise, and great in Houston wet weather. I looked at the G2 version but I didn't like the side wall redesign so I went with the older version P265/70/17/113S. The next weekend after the suspension swap I had a Dallas discount tire mounted them @37 psi, I backed it down to 35 psi after a week. It's been a month I have to say they ride really well, less body roll on the turns and at the steering wheel I have a firm ride not really stiff but gripper more responsive feel. My caster was left 4 and 3.75 right side my alignment mech did a great job and no drifting on high speed freeway driving. AT threads have a tad more road noise than all seasons and I expected that. I'll sport these for awhile, it's driven mostly as a family hauler anyways. I can't wait to take it out camping/trail riding in Big Bend. I have Toyo Open Country ATs 275/70/18 E rated on my 03 Tacoma and love them but I can definitely feel the weight of the E weight declining braking performance and premature deceleration. When if ever C rated 275/70/17 Toyo OC or BFG KO2 Unicorn appears, I'll ride it.

Glad to know I'm not going crazy. I'm assuming that after alignment they pushed the caster more forward so it's more pronounced than it was before aligning. The suspension is considerably better than what was stock on my SR5, but a little more harsh on initial bump than the Fox suspension on my FJ was. Trying hard to not compare the two though. I've been really happy with this setup so far though. Just need to get used to some of the quarks. May mess with tire pressure to see if I can subdue it a bit.

I don't know what kind of tires you are running but try 35psi. What were your caster numbers?

Just picked up the entire suspension kit at my local dealer in southern california, Tustin Toyota. Out the door was $557. They had one more left but said they were not going to sell it at the price i got it and will be marked up. Good luck if anyone else is looking for it.

Ok....going to try and get these ordered today. Glad it seems like I haven't completely missed this deal. I was going to get 6112/5160s already until I saw this thread...the price is awesome!

I wanted to get at least a 2" lift up front....this set will give me 1". Dobinson's 2" TRD coils won't be available till July/August. Is there a king coil or something similar that would work instead or am I forced to wait for a Dobinson?

Check out pages 32-35 of this thread....the dobinsons coils are made for the 4runner Pro 6112s. These FJ trail 6112’s have a different lower coil perch location which necessitates a longer coil (14”)...not sure of the length that the 2” dobinsons coil will be but they’re still made for the pro model 6112s which have a “higher” lower coil perch compared to the FJ trail 6112s.

To get another 1” lift, you may have to either go with a 1/2”-3/8” top plate spacer (gives ~1” lift) or a toytec 1” coil preload spacer.

No, I know that. I'm saying...the 1" dobinsons trd pro coil will give me the exact same lift as this kit. They are making a 2" trd pro coil which should give me 2" of lift, but it won't be ready till july/august. I'm asking if there is a different option of coil besides the dobinsons that is available now (like, from King)...

Oh...and I did place an order with toyotapartsdeal.com, but canceled it after talking to my local dealers. (2 of them). They both said there was plenty of stock at the Portland warehouse. Anyway, I wanted to go with a local dealer because I get 15% Costco discount on parts/service, though I have to pay 6% sales tax so really its just a 9% discount...but...better than nothing.

Also...just thinking a bit more about the FJ pro kit vs a normal 6112 shock. I was originally thinking of trying to get a longer coil to achieve the higher lift, but....is getting a top plate spacer exactly like adjusting the normal 6112 to a higher lift setting? is there a performance hit when adjusting a 6112 to a higher setting vs using a longer coil?

If I'm understanding everything...I wouldn't want a 1" preload spacer because that DOES affect off road performance, but not sure about a top plate spacer...

Top plate spacers do not preload the coil like the adjustable 6112s and the perch spacers do. They fit on top of the coilover (top plate) thus basically lengthening the coil over and giving you lift. These are a good alternative to not wanting to preload coils more and also for lean correction. There are different thickness top plate spacers available depending on lift required. The 3/8” and 1/2” top plate spacers will require longer top plate studs which along with the spacers are easy to install. Lift amount will be close to 2x the spacer thickness. If you “hard core” fast drive off-road I personally wouldn’t go too big (over 1/2”) on a top plate spacer without installing larger bumpstops.

As of now I’m not aware of any 600lb coils that are longer than 14” that will fit these 6112s in the FJ kit. The Dobinsons Pro 1” lift coils are shorter than the 14” FJ kit coils....so not so sure they’d give you the same 1” lift that the 600lb FJ kit coils give. Dobinsons 2” lift coils may work to get another 1” but no way of knowing until someone can measure them and/or try them out.

Dropped from 42 to 35 psi and retorqued everything just to be safe. Made a considerable difference. I'm used to running higher psi, but seems like on the 4rumner the sweet spot is lower.

Caster
Driver: 3.5
Pass: 3.3

Thanks for the suggestion!

I mean..yes, the 6112 would be more ready out of the box, but it would be $755 for the 6112 plus $410 for the 5160s...so $1165 (I would need to buy rear coils for either).

Thats a $600 difference. A top spacer plate is $65....Front Top Plate Spacer Kit

Or, I wait for a 2" coil from dobinsons for..$205. So, at max, thats $400 difference.

What I'm still wanting to find out...is if a longer coil (from dobinsons) would theoretically perform better than a 6112 that has a high adjustment on it. Basically...an adjustable 6112...does it have the same disadvantages of using a spacer kit when adjusted high or ?

I received my kit and noticed that a couple of the boxes have what appears to be oil marks on them. Is this normal or something I should be concerned about?
