Black & De-Badged

CanadianTRD

I couldn't find any examples, particularly 3rd gens in black with no badges.

So here it is, (all this project made me realize is how disgusting my Canadian winter rust is as it sticks out even more now lol. Strange, as there isn't a single molecule of rust anywhere else on the body...)

I painted all the badges flat black with clear coat, just in case I decide to re-badge in some custom form or another. I think I will eventually just go with a custom front grille + FJ Cruiser TOYOTA badge, and a TRD chrome badge in the lower right of the hatch.

I personally like the badges in Black pearl... when the truck is black... that could be one option for you??

Truck looks decent, but I see the standard rust spots on the hatch near the rear wiper arm and the corner of the back window. So common up here... :(

I really dig the back Limiteds though... you're a lucky man!

Nicely done. I've still got to get that stupid dried up residue off mine. The badges were barely hanging on, so I just helped them along.

Thanks for the suggestion, I am going to let this look sink in for a while, see what I feel later on. I agree on the pearl, i was testing the flat look out and aside from the 3D, they sort of disappear.

Yeah, I notice a lot of streaks and smudges on the tailgate in the pictures, the buff and polish is a work in progress, still a lot of work to go. It was neglected for many many years :( I started by hand, and was making more progress on losing pounds to sweat than removing all that oxidation and swirl lol. Finally started using the power tools. To be honest it sort of seems pointless, the whole tailgate needs to be replaced, the rust is really quite bad.

Black 4Runners are the Boss ;) I also like Santacruz's red color, and of course good ole Desert Dune color matched! I'll eventually color match the Limited trim black or bedliner.

I was using my fingernails for days, until I got out the buffing/polishing compounds and a power buffer on my drill today...took all the residue off in seconds! Oh well, live and learn. lol

Mines blacked out and de badged as well. I also did my tail lights black and my bumper is also black.

I had never seen your rig before today (nice one, btw), have any other shots of the rear besides this one?

I don't think many other trucks look as good all black as ours do. Well, let's be real...we have the best looking trucks ever made

I have one in my build thread with the black taillights but the emblems were still on at that point. It's a bit dark here but I could try and take one real quick.

It's a bit dark but you get the picture. Ill take a better one tomorrow in the sun light.

All good, no worries. I would complete the look with the plate trim and the bumper trim. If you do, I would advise against removing the plate trim. It will never go back in as cleanly after removing it, clips break etc. A good candidate for "on the truck plastidipping".

I like the TRD emblems, tasteful and subtle just the way it should be.

I actually like the color of the plate trim against the black. I think I'm gonna keep it that way. The bumper trim is definitely on the list of things to do. I just gotta get around too it.

As for the TRD emblem, it was starting to peel and looked kinda bad. I may put it back on eventually. I'm not really sure though. It's sitting around somewhere. I've also got the TRD emblems on the side of the front doors.

I hear you, it's good contrast. The reason I went with "metallic black" even though it's just rattle can and doesn't look very metallic-y. If I end up buying a replacement gate, I'll do the next one in a more significant "pearl" or "fleck" look.

Get a new one off eBay and clear coat the shyte out of it! The one with red/silver/white looks badass on black.
