Hey everyone, first of all I hope this kind of thread is allowed. I'm not trying to advertise, just wanted to share a black friday deal I found that brings an OEM power steering rack down to $400. I'm not affiliated in any way, just wanting to share a good deal since I've been putting off getting one due to their price. I'm seeing threads calling one at $500 a good deal, and that was from 2019 (pre Covid inflation!!).

In a similar spirit, anyone else know of other good black friday deals? Had me thinking maybe there are some other deals going on right now.

I just discovered I have a sloppy inner tie rod. Considering the cost of the tie rod and tool to change it, A $400 steering rack has my attention. Are these fairly easy to change out?

Do you know if it includes the inner tie rod ends? In addition to how good this deal looks, it has free shipping also. Camelback doesn’t have that on the last rack I bought.

Well then I messed up, because I ordered it. I've never owned an IFS vehicle, so this is new to me. $150 for the rod end, $130 for the wrenches, plus a new boot. I figure at $400 for the whole setup I would be getting more for my $$$. This thing is probably due to have the rack bushings done , so this takes care of that as well.

They were referencing how easy it is.
 
There were some great deals out there, 25% off and free shipping.
Stocked up on brake parts, suspension bushings, etc.

This. You didn't mess up, that's a steal for an OEM rack. But you're gonna spend all weekend changing the steering rack instead of a couple hours changing a tie rod end.
 
Once these trucks get over about 250k on the OEM racks it's about time to change 'em. Best to do it while Toyota is still offering them, and certainly with this great discount. I bought some stuff as well and was surprised at how low the price was.

Ehhh...I think that's pretty dependent on user ability and vehicle condition.
Unscrewing the line nuts (with the CORRECT flare wrench) is likely going to
be the most tedious part. If the lines need to be cut - well...

Timmy's rack video was invaluable and I do recommend someone
watch it a few times before tackling it. Even DIY he'll still come out ahead!

So you guys do think it makes sense to change the rack in this situation? I'm second guessing now and it's not to late to cancel the order.

I crawled under there and the big D shaped bushing is fine, the bushing on the vertical bolt is trashed and the one on the horizontal bolt has some cracking but is holding shape. Plus the one bad inner tie rod

If I had to cut the lines it looks like there is only one HP line.
My biggest concern is getting the rack and steering wheel centered right.
 
IMO, changing an Inner rod end is what's going to take forever.
Swapping to poly while under the truck is also a small PITA.
A new, leak-free unit with new guts (depending on your year, even new style guts)
bypasses all that and shouldn't give you any grief for decades.

Count your OTRE threads and it should get you pretty dang close.
A fresh alignment isn't a bad idea though once it's all installed.

Well that makes me feel better. The 4runner is a 2000 and has the old style rack. It only has 150k but the PO neglected the suspension, so I'm doing a lot of work on that. Goal is to be my daily driver.

My understanding is that the rack "should" come centered. Hopefully I can rely on that when reattaching the steering shaft. I will be buying new tires and getting an alignment after the repair, for sure.

I thought you were buying a rack because you didn't want to deal with changing an inner tie rod end lol.

If your bushings are that trashed then yeah you're like 75% of the way to swapping the rack. I ended up having to buy a new rag joint when I did mine because the original one was seized onto the original rack, and the high pressure power steering line was a horrible fight to get off the old rack too. It was a solid 3 day job for me between having to take the pinion mount off the old rack and pull the pressure hose to stick it in a vise and heat it with a torch, and having to go buy a new rag joint. Hopefully yours isn't as much of a fight.

I don't think it's a bad idea for you to replace the rack instead of just the inner tie rods. A few years ago my rack was fine, so I only bought inner tie rods to replace. Then a year later my rack started leaking and I've put off replacing it until now. If I had replaced the rack originally I would have saved a few hundred $$ and the headache of having to do it now.
 
Was anyone notified of this sale by Toyota? I've got in on a couple of these sales before after seeing forum posts like this one. Would be nice to get a Email from Toyota.
