Black rim thoughts -let's discuss

Hello, everybody - Been seeing a lot of threads regarding Plasti-dipping rims and whatnot. Wanted to see folks' opinion on this option. My tire guy turned me on to this and had him do it when I put the Duratracs on last week. He took the rims, scuffed them up and painted them with Rustoleum Hi-Temp Outdoor Grill paint. He offered to do it on my spare first (I have learned the valuable lesson of considering the condition of the spare), to see if I liked it. I love it, I think it looks like Powder Coating, but without the price tag. It's very cheap and easy to touch up if necessary. I love the Plasti-Dip for badges and emblems and other strange uses (I find it to be the Duct Tape of the Paint variety). I recall reading a thread (can't remember from whom) that said the Plasti-Dip rims can stain in some mud and dirt types. The OP said they clear coated the rims after the Plasti-Dipping to prevent this. Still seems iffy to me being that if they get scratched, you may have to peel the whole mess off to touch it up. All I have to do is grab the $4.00 rattle can and do it. Check the pics and let's discuss -Happy Runner Day

As I understand it, plasti-dip is a 6-12 mo solution where as powder-coat is a 5-10 year solution.

It has been almost 2 years since I had my wheels powder coated gloss black. They are still pristine.

If you were to use Plasti-dip I suggest the following:
Clean thoroughly
Plasti-dip
Gloss black

That rustolium won't last. It is cheapo paint. Good brands are sold at automotive stores vs home depot. Just a warning.

* I finally got my new 5-Star Toyota Wheels installed.
* I had them Powder Coated at --San Diego Powder Coating-- which is located in El Cajon.
* I painted the Center Caps Toyota logo gloss red by hand.

Total cost: $320 out the door for the powder-coating.

Factory Center Cap Painted Red (above)

* It took about 1 hr to paint the Logo red on all 4 of these
* I actually spent far more time failing at painting the center-caps gloss black before adding the red
* I was forced to strip them down to the plastic and primer them before I got the paint to stick

Automotive stores like NAPA, Autozone, O'reillys, etc? Cause they all sell Rustoleum. I have used different paints from Kryola, Valspar, Duplicolor, and Rustoleum many times on many many different applications, and I believe Rustoleum is the more superior product, hands down. And in my research Ive found that to be a common opinon. Valspar would be my second choice. I dont know why OP's tire guy chose to use a grill paint though.

A good paint really doesnt have much to do with the brand, as it does the type of paint. Urethans are far superior to acrylic enamels, which is what comes in a spray can.

To establish some cred, beyond the painting Ive done recreationally, I paint jets for a living. :boxer:

OP, I like plastidip for some applications, but not for wheels. But I wont say too much on that as many guys on the forum use it on wheels and Ive offended a few in the past. As brian mentioned its a short term application. But I suppose there ars some advantages to that

I had my rims powdercoated about 12 years ago(see avatar) and they're still in excellent condition. Payed $100 for all four but that was a long time ago. I went with a satin finish, not too shiny, not dull either. I think the gloss would probably last the longest tho.

I personally like the bedliner look if you want to go black. Ever think about painting graphite color? I wanted to paint mine black, until I saw members' pics with the graphite painted rims. Looks better imho...but that's just me.
