Black798's 98 limited build thread

Yes. 3x2x.120 wall that I reinforced with a scab plate on top of it. There are 6 1/2 grade 8 bolts capivetly held in the crossmember that the bumper bolts to and it was welded, plated, and gusseted to the frame rails. Significantly stronger than what I had before and increased my approach angle as well

Thanks for the info. I am working with a local fabricator on my bumper, seems nobody has exactly what I want, but your design very close to the thought in my head. Best looking one I have seen.

Looks rad man! How does the tub look from the interior?

I had to trim the kick panels back a bit to fit properly but after doing that it looks completely factory unless you really know to look for it and then you can see a little bulge under the carpet where the new tub comes in.

Probably should be studying for my Thermodynamics exam but whatever, this post is already overdo.

Few weeks back I got down to Moab with some friends from Bozeman and also met up with the other usual suspects for some wheeling.

First day down there we met of with some Jeep guys and hit up poison spider. Man do I have some major want for one of those new JLs, those things straight do work.

Being that this was the first real trail I had done since doing the new gears, tires, and everything else I was a bit timid and was taking the easy line for the first bit of the trail but quickly started getting back into the swing of it and started trying to follow all the lines the jeeps on 38s and 40s were doing.

Everything had been going great so far and then we started having issues. The last climb up onto the top of the mesa into tie rod flats has a pretty big optional line that I have done in the past so I figured lets give it a go. I got up on my line and the truck was being really weird not being able to grab traction even with both lockers on and it was really trying to buck. On my last attempt it really bucked and jolted the whole truck around quite a bit. I ended up taking an easier line up to the top and jumped out to watch the other truck come up. Then as Adam, blue 5th gen, was coming up my line his front end jumped a little with a dull pop. The classic 5th gen on 35s tie rod buckle. Well shit he needs to get up to flat ground to fix that but he basically had no steering since his tires were toed all the way in. I backed down and hooked up a strap to him to help guide his front end up, and the whole way up I was hearing a solid thunk every 15 feet or so. Great, day 1 and Ive already blown the rear diff?

Got the tie rod swapped in about 15 minutes, did a quick alignment and we were off... sorta. Made it about 30 more feet and that clunk was getting much more noticeable. I jumped out to take a look and see if I could spot anything and I noticed a shiny but of metal on my upper link tower for the 3 link. Looking closer I saw the jam nuts had backed off on the upper link, the pinion angle was angling up towards the floor, and looking a bit closer the cross member where the 3rd link mounts were had buckled inwards and ripped the mount halfway off, I guess that explains the weird bucking on the last climb and clunk. Every time the suspension compressed the link tower was just smashing into the frame

Time for another trail fix, I didnt have a way to repair the link mount but I did have the stock mounts left on the drivers side, so we pulled a link off Adams truck, thankfully he has adjustable uppers, and put it into my driver side mounts. Problem solved. At this point we had been working on the trucks for quite awhile and the Jeeps had gone off to finis the poison spider loop.

We opted to head to town and made a quick stop at the Oreilys for Adam to get some more inner tie rods and for me to do a quick alignment on his truck. We headed back out to camp and after being there for 5 minutes opted to make the quick 2 minute drive over to mess around in the dunes.

After a solid 30 minutes of hammer the trucks and finding a nice dune to jump them off Matthias in the 80 went just a little too far right on the dune and sent the 80 HARD. It was a good 3 to 4 feet in the air. My initial reaction when the front ed popped up was "oh shit!" And what goes up must come down... The fat whale came down really hard on the drivers front tire and after looping back around it was obvious there was a big problem. The steering wheel was now off by 90 degrees, the camber was way out of whack, and something was pouring fluid. We decided this was a good point to head back to camp and limp the truck over there where the tools were to figure out what was up. But not before getting a nice afternoon stretch

Those bumpers and the tub job turned out awesome, great work Phoenix!

Waiting for Part 2 of the Moab trip... :pop2:

Nice meeting you out in Moab this time around!

Those action shots are the best I think I've seen on here.
Awesome work with everything.

Thanks! the trip was an absolute riot, the people are what really takes it though. Having a group of guys that just gets it and can have fun even when stuff breaks is awesome.

Thanks Jeremiah! Definitely referenced the tub job you did a lot for when I did mine. The wire skeleton made it soooo much easier and cleaner. I'm also super stoked on the bumpers, they aren't perfect and I have some small things I want to improve on when the time comes to repowder coat them but redoing them was a much needed change IMO.

Thanks Kyle! it was great finally getting to put a face to your rig, spent a lot of time drooling over it haha, watching that crawl box do work has me totally sold on it, I NEED one now.

Moab Continued...

First up realized I didn't post a picture of the broken tie rod we had on Adams truck. Folded clean in half on a pretty tiny bounce with the front locker on. Hopefully will be able to get the video up of that.
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/147275993@N05/47532790891/in/album-72157690540797533/" title="IMAG1194"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/7922/47532790891_4e5d586f9b_b.jpg" width="768" height="1024" alt="IMAG1194"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

So with the 80 back at camp we started trying to find the source of the leak. Lucky for us toyota crammed all sorts of shit in the drivers front corner of the engine bay and it was all covered in fluid. We couldn't really tell where it was coming from so we decided to leave it until morning. While we were standing around I got in touch with Fishwerks and they had been having a similar day with broken motor mounts and possibly blow diffs.

Next morning we rolled out of camp pretty early to head tow town and trouble shoot the 80. Back to the O'Reilys parking lot! In the daylight it was a lot easier to see what was wrong, the return line for the power steering had an inch long split in it letting it just puke fluid. an our later we had tht fixed and we tried to find out why the steering was way off and the camber was also so far negative. Well the tie rod ends were seized and the knuckles dint have any slop in them so it must be fine right? Right. Lets go wheeling.

@20 minutes later we had met up with Fishwerks derpifulFlemster, natemob EatonKyleH and a few others and were airing down in the hells revenge parking lot.

Time for some fun in the rocks. This was my 4th time running hells revenge, seems like I cat go on a moab trip without doing it, but this was the first time I had actually seen standing water on the trail. After a blown tire on the first rock ledge we were cruising headed for hells gate.

Adam dropping in

Chris bringing him up
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/147275993@N05/32515755757/in/album-72157690540797533/" title="IMG_6855"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/7923/32515755757_e2e6b534a2_b.jpg" width="875" height="1024" alt="IMG_6855"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Look at those tires, thats with the wheel going straight... The tie rods were deflecting that much just from the side pressure of the wall. Have I mentioned how WEAK these tie rods are on the 5th gens? This ended up with Adam slipping off the wall and needing to be winched up.
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/147275993@N05/32515759047/in/album-72157690540797533/" title="IMG_6856-2"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/7857/32515759047_9b62ac7924_b.jpg" width="1024" height="1014" alt="IMG_6856-2"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Watched these guys almost flop for like 45 minutes. He ended up driving out of it but it was pretty sketch
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/147275993@N05/46734386194/in/album-72157690540797533/" title="IMG_6894"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/7839/46734386194_d6d6978666_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_6894"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Matthias had gone to the effort of manually locking his rear diff since the motor has been broke since he bought the truck just for this obstacle. The wider and slightly longer wheelbase walked right up it
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/147275993@N05/47457449991/in/album-72157690540797533/" title="IMG_6911"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/7859/47457449991_e2ea56edd7_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="IMG_6911"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

He made quick work of the first section and then on the last climb out this happened.... It happened so fast there was no stopping it. And it was super weird since looking at pictures he was on the EXACT line I took last year. Thankfully no one was hurt and body damage was pretty minimal. After getting a few guys on it we were able to tip the truck up and using my winch and derpiful's we pulled the truck up so we could pull plugs on it before starting. Surprisingly the cylinders were dray and the truck fired right up without even smoking.

After all that it was getting pretty late in the afternoon so we made pretty quick time on the rest of the trail not stopping at any other obstacles.

After airing up and bullshitting for a bit we headed back to camp since it was well past beer:30

You guys had too much fun out there it seems like haha, break all the things.

Glad we met up again out there, it was fun and thanks dragging me out of the gate. I like the bumpers even more after seeing them in person, seems like the truck is pretty dialed in other than the link mount in the rear.

Photos are looking nice!

We definitely broke a lot this trip haha! But thats honestly half the fun for me, being able to come up with a way to make it work and keep on wheeling it.

Always a good time wheeling with you guys for sure, and 3rd gens got stick together even one takes a little nap. Not really sure what Im going to do about the rear link mount right now. Waiting a few more weeks until the weather drys up some and I can take a closer look. Right now I'm still driving around with Adams link in it. The more I look at the truck though the more broken stuff Im finding though, just an excuse to beef it up though.

Moab Round 3

3rd day in Moab was going to be a big one. The plan was to run Moab Rim, but the 80's power steering was still acting funny, and it now appeared that the wheel bearings were shot and the drivers side birf was puking oil so we opted to park it for the day and take the 3 4runners.

Adam and myself were double locked but Cody was open open and only on 33s, we walked the first section and figured that worst case we would just winch him up the first few hard obstacles since they were close together and the rest of the trail was rumored to be fairly mild.

First big obstacle after the easy off camber climb up is the devils crack. I was in the lead and had seen enough guys do it that I had a pretty good idea of the line to take. Rolled into it rear locked, positioned myself where I wanted to be locked up the front and started crawling up.

Did a fat ass wheelstand and kinda slid off my line when the rear end started trying to climb. The shitty thing about this obstacle is its kind of a one shot deal and if you fall into the larger hole you pretty much have to back down and start over. Its also right on the edge of a cliff so you kind of have to Austin Powers your way around to rest. 50 turns later I was giving it another shot a little more to the passenger side and walked right up.
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/147275993@N05/47452316591/in/album-72157690540797533/" title="IMG_1179"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/7817/47452316591_2847c0493e_c.jpg" width="800" height="534" alt="IMG_1179"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Cody was up next and it was obvious the best option was to get him in the est postion possible and then winch him up. I flipped around and got setup and we had him up real quick. Adam came up next and walked right up the same line I took. Front Locker FTW!

Theres a series of off camber ledges that you have to cross to get up to the next big obstacle whic is Z Turn. Cody's clutch was feeling kinda strange so we decided to park his truck and he jumped in with me. Z Turn is just as it sounds, a large Z of big off camber ledges. I struggle to find the right line but after a few wheel stands, and some failed attempts I got up it.
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/147275993@N05/46537134445/in/album-72157690540797533/" title="IMG_1216"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/7814/46537134445_1d61234e74_c.jpg" width="800" height="534" alt="IMG_1216"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/147275993@N05/32510604797/in/album-72157690540797533/" title="IMG_1219"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/7895/32510604797_44e53bbbab_c.jpg" width="800" height="534" alt="IMG_1219"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

I was working my way up the second section of the turn which took a bit more effort than it looked like it should have but when I came back down Adam was having issues with his steering AGAIN. This time the column had decided to lock itself with the tires turned all the way to the passenger side. Thankfully after restarting the truck it was fixed. Very weird. Being a slightly longer wheelbase he was able to make the ledges look a whole lot easier, crazy how much of a difference 5 inches makes.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/147275993@N05/46729327024/in/album-72157690540797533/" title="IMG_7008"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/7806/46729327024_f8833c07e2_c.jpg" width="800" height="534" alt="IMG_7008"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

The trail then is just traversing a bunch of of camber areas which in my truck absolutely SUCKED. Between the rear shocks needing a rebuild and the soft landcruiser it felt like I was going to tip the whole time.
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/147275993@N05/46537248225/in/album-72157690540797533/" title="IMG_7010"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/7902/46537248225_e8165b5e40_c.jpg" width="800" height="534" alt="IMG_7010"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

The last "big" obstacle before getting on top of the mesa is a 2 foot ledge, just big enough to not be able to easily clear on 35s. While I was trying to get myself up the ledge Adam tried another line further right and just about put her over.
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/147275993@N05/46729223784/in/album-72157690540797533/" title="IMG_1233"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/7926/46729223784_31e88fefc7_c.jpg" width="800" height="534" alt="IMG_1233"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

After that tense little bit we were up on top of the mesa on flatter ground where the trail gets a lot easier. There were still a few fun spots to play in though.

Got down to the trail head and aired up. Adam needed to be back in salt lake so he headed out and the rest of us headed to camp.

It was still fairly early in the day and we weren't really motivated to swap new wheel bearings into the 80 so being bored we went back to the dunes.

The next morning we woke up to a rain storm and spitting snow but decided to head east and run Top of the world

This trail in the snow and running the loop in reverse was pretty interesting. Definitely made it harder and it sucked there wasn't much of a view at the top.

When we got back to Moab the weather seemed to be clearing up and the lighting was perfect so we washed the trucks a bit and headed back to Moab rim to get some shots from the first obstacle

We headed back to camp and found that both ground tents were far from waterproof and the insides were soaked. And about 10 minutes later it was pouring rain. We decided to pull up camp and head north until we beat the weather and had a drier spot to camp. Unfortunately it never happened. We ended up driving clear to Idaho falls before the rain finally let up so we just pushed home. Even though it sucked to get chased out of Moab by the weather the whole valley looked sweet with the sun coming through the storm in certain spots and it was still a good ending to an epic trip! Cant wait for the next one

Yeah, those pictures are crazy town nice. Who is the trail photographer? That looks like some serious fun.

And at least you didn't find out in the middle of the night that the tents weren't waterproof, lol. I upped my tent game up recently as I ended up camping about three times in the snow in my 3-season / essentially summer tent. There was little reason to set the tent up, as it did nothing for me. I wanted a solid 4-season option and went with a Kodiak canvas 10x10. It is supposed to excel in crap weather. And we got plenty of that here in the PNW. LOL.

The majority of the time I'm behind the lens, or Ill hand my camera off to someone and have the settings where I want them before hand. The majic is really in the editing, a lot of those pictures look like total crap before hand but after some color correction in lightroom they really come to life. Just goes to show its not about the gear its how you use it. My camera is a 8 year old canon rebel t3i with a nifty 50 and tamron wide angle 18-250 lens so its nothing special

This thread is due for an update. Havent gotten out to do any wheeling lately. Between work and a mild spring that has left the snow line super low down there arent many places open and ad those that are I just dont have time to get out to.

That being said quite a bit has happened with the truck. First up was the power steering, since going to 35s the steering especially in the rocks has left me wanting more. It seems that the pump goes into bypass to easily taking away a lot of power assist. I decided to dissect my old rack to first see if the seals were up to the task of more pressure. Well after pulling that apart I feel like a dumb ass for buying a new rack, all the parts to rebuild one cost less than 200$ from toyota and they are so simple a monkey could do it. All good info for the future and I was left with the impression the seals could handle some more pressure so I turned to the pump. Pulled that apart ad was dissapointed to find that toyota built the bypass valve in such a way that its not possible to alter the internals of the valve to up the line pressure. Oh well Ive got another trick to fix the steering in the works. In the meantime it was cool to see how the pump worked and it really opened up my eyes that I need a power steering cooler. This fluid was bright red atf less than a year ago.

And heres what I have in mind for a cooler.

Next up was fixing the upper link that I destroyed in Moab. With the stock crossmember smashed I didnt see a way to salvage it or reinforce the mount in such a way that the failure wouldnt happen again. I got to thinking and started down the rabbit hole of improving geometry again. What I settled on is I want to redo the lower links and extend them to around 34" and also ditch the land cruiser coils for some king 2.5x12 coilovers. This will solve a lot of problems I have with the rear end currently and would open up the possibility of running an antirock swaybar. That being said I decided to redo the upper link extending it to the frame and setting it for where the lowers will be moved to in the future. This did require me to get a new muffler but that wasnt an issue since my dynomax muffler had cracked, again... I settled on a flowmaster delta flow 60. Good rumble but not obnoxious and its a small package,

I planned on this sort of being the stopping point for the truck for awhile untill my rear locker had a seal shit the bed. The rear end has always been a bit whiny since I regeared and thats largely due to my setup. When I did it I had the flu, it was 10 degrees in the garage, and I needed the truck together asap. Since I had the rear end out again I said f it and started from scratch. ARB replaced the entire locker under warranty no questions asked an I threw some new gears at it. Patterns this time were much better.

2nd gen supercharger complete down to the original trd supercharged decals! 2k shipped to my door, dont mind if I do. I installed it last weekend along with new plugs, valve cover gaskets, and some other odds and ends. Man do I wish I would have done this a long time ago, the truck is so much more fun to drive. I cant wait to get my gauges installed and start tuning it to really squeeze all the horse torques out of it. Before installing I gave the blower a good once over, changed the oil and cleaned the internals. Everything looked in great shape.

Also might as well throw these up here as another project Ive been working on. Not mine but I have been doing all the fab work on it. JDM BJ74 land cruiser thats being fully converted to coilovers and links with tons of other crawling goodies. Also may or may not have chopped the entire back half of the body and frame off.
